Phillip Herndon is in a league of his own. The 125-kilogram powerlifter competed at the 2023 United States Powerlifting Coalition (USPC) Mid-Atlantic Classic & Regional Championship on March 18, 2023, and scored three personal bests, including a new all-time world record raw squat of 411 kilograms (906.1 pounds). Here are Herndon’s results below; he weighed in officially at 117 kilograms (258 pounds):
2023 USPC Mid-Atlantic Classic & Regional Championship Results — Phillip Herndon | 125KG, Raw

Squat — 411 kilograms (906.1 pounds)
Bench Press — 230 kilograms (507.1 pounds)
Deadlift — 383 kilograms (844.4 pounds)
Total — 1,024 kilograms (2,257.5 pounds)

Going a perfect nine for nine in attempts across the ninth annual edition of the contest held at Exile Fitness gym in Baltimore, MD, Herndon eclipsed the previous all-time world record raw squat of 410 kilograms (903.9 pounds) scored by Daniel Cornelius at the 2017 United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) Freedom Fitness Classic.

World Record Squats and Conventional Deadlifting
During his all-time world record raw squat attempt, Herdon wore knee sleeves, a lifting belt, and wrist wraps. Although he appeared shakey during the eccentric portion of the lift, his ascent was smooth, and he did not appear to incur any struggle en route to a clean lockout. Notably, Herndon performed his deadlift in a conventional stance with a mixed grip, though a sumo squat was legal.
According to Open Powerlifting, the 2023 USPC Mid-Atlantic Classic & Regional Championship is Herndon’s second sanctioned meet competing in the 125-kilogram weight category. His first was the 2023 World Raw Powerlifting Federation (WRPF) The Ghost Clash 2 on Feb. 18, 2023, where he ranked second overall to Shane Hunt.

Until that meet, Herndon had previously competed exclusively in the 110-kilogram category since August 2019, appearing in 12 meets. Of those 12, he won 11 — a 91.6 percent win rate. During that time, he squatted well past the all-time world record raw squat in training, achieving a 412.8-kilogram (910-pound) lift on Feb. 4, 2023.
In Baltimore, Herndon destroyed his previous competition best lifts in all three disciplines. His new all-time world record raw squat is 16 kilograms heavier than his previous competition best squat. He matched his competition best bench press and surpassed his deadlift by 10.5 kilograms.
