A Planet Fitness club in Midland, Mich., will receive an LGBT Pride Award at a banquet next week.
The club will receive the award in the business category from Perceptions Saginaw Valley, a support group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals in Saginaw, Midland and Bay City, Mich., The Saginaw News reported.
Perceptions Saginaw Valley told iClubs that Planet Fitness is receiving the award because the club “is committed to a non-intimating and welcoming environment for members with its 'Judgement Free Zone.' Planet Fitness's gender identity non-discriminating policy is a model for other businesses.”
In March, Planet Fitness revoked a woman’s membership because of the way she complained about a transgender woman who appeared in the women’s locker room. Yvette Cormier toldThe Saginaw News she was the woman whose membership was revoked. Cormier later filed a lawsuit against Planet Fitness.

Carlotta Sklodowska told the newspaper she was the transgender woman in question and that she used the women’s locker room on two separate occasions to hang up her coat and purse before her workout.
McCall Gosselin, director of public relations for Planet Fitness, Newington, N.H., explained why the company revoked the membership in a statement to iClubs back in March:
“Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.
“The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was cancelled.”
The 2015 LGBT Pride Awards banquet will be held Tuesday, June 23, in Saginaw.
