Doesnt anyone ever work out anymore?

I may have addressed this before, but seems these days no one really works out anymore. Is our society that lazy? I see more gyms and health clubs than ever before yet where are the members?

In my humble facility, been dead almost all day, the munchkins are back in school, I know its Friday and people trying to enjoy the last gasps of summer but I have only seen maybe 15 or so people in 11 hrs.

Being a small city of 25K in the cornfields doesn't help either as they have that rural mentality, you know, drink beer, smoke some weed and screw some fat bimbo.

Back in the 80's & 90's and even 2000 and bit beyond I was packed, guys waiting for barbells. Now not even close....ok enough bitching!!

Man I have the opposite bitch. Our gym (s) are packed. I'm in the cornfields too but we have a major Air Force Base here that drive not only the economy but the mentality. Now don't get me wrong the good ol' boys are at the Hole In The Wall but the countless contractors and spouses are packing the gyms and roads with their bicycles.
I guess I would be happy if I owned or managed the gym like in the past but as a member they can all hit the road! Go block traffic on your bicycle! Lol

Sorry brutha I guess grass is always greener.

Ya just gotta hold out until new years (miserable )

Must be nice Bro! In this hick town honestly the school district is the citys largest employer! Jobs and factories are all gone, hell way its going, I'll be the largest employer soon LOL
Ya know as long as the EFT's from members keep clearing, guess be OK. In this biz its the number of people you have under contract as opposed to attendance. It actually nice I can train in my own place alone at 1030 AM....but when its crowded, its hell, people do not leave me alone, arghhhhh

The base is good but has some drawbacks many families here have both parents working for a contractor making huge money and it keeps the price of things pretty high expecially real estate. Others are forced to rent shit holes. Good and bad...we would be a ghost town without the base but we are only about an 1:15 outside DC so there is also a lot of commuters. Even being so close to DC we live in a fairly good area, lots of Amish with horse & buggy around.
Yes EFT is golden it had just started when I was running the gym, 20 years ago. We were the only gym in the area. The owners were all sales oriented. Turn um and burn them. After the trained me the we're never there maybe 1x a month. Everyone who visited signed a contract. I was required to sign up 100 member a month. Even if I had to go to subway at lunch time with contracts. Even litteraly pick up hitch hickers, take them to the gym, lend them the $1 to make the contract binding and sue them after not paying for 4 months. Loads of collection calls and hiring, training of telemarketers.
Don't judge that's nothing the owners owned the largest title company in the tri-state area. Many Real Estate Companys when we sold the gym. I ran in home settlement teams (sales orrented meaning you don't leave unless they sign) for streamline refinance lenders. I ended up running a mortgage company for them for many years. Luckily I couldn't handle the 6 day a week limousine parties. I got really bad with party drugs and couldn't perform my job anymore. It was crazy these guys were 15-20 years older and had no problem stopping at 3-4 in the morning and being ready for work 6-7 like nothing. It really was a blessing I know many of them were indicted and ended up in prison after the mortgage collapse.

Anyway sorry such a long story. Funny how small things change your life. The way I got started working for that gym. I had been in the Marines. When I got out I owed the gym money. They offered to let me work it of and workout doing telemarketing.

Funny... I'm in the cornfields of NJ in a little tiny Rural town, population about 7500. There was once a small, family owned gym in town that seemed to do a very good business. My wife belonged there for a while. They ended up selling the place, I think, and shortly after it closed its doors. Another guy made a go of it with a gym in the same location and it never took off.

We, too have a military base close by, but they have a gym on the premises that's apparently pretty well equipped. I know a couple retired military who were going to the base to train in the gym there.

I lived in Vegas for 2 years, from 2012 to 2014. That place is VERY fitness oriented. Lots of people make their living with their looks there, lots of cocktail waitresses and others who need to look good to make a buck. And I guess it rubs off on much of the rest of the population. There's a gym on every corner there, it seems, and they're always jammed. LVAC (Las Vegas Athletic Club), for instance, had 3 locations when I was there and I think was going to open a 4th; is open 24 hours a day (as most gyms there are) and the parking lot was ALWAYS full no matter the time of day or night.

I joined Retro Fitness when we returned to NJ and found a completely different environment. When I first started training in the 80's, I belonged to this dingy little body building gym called Man's World Gym, owned and run by Joe Dodd, who was a major body builder in the late 60's and 70's. That place was mobbed every single day. And full of in shape bodybuilders including Phil Hill and Derek Whitsett. Phil place 5th in the Mr O back in 89 or 90, something like that.

The atmosphere at Retro was NOTHING like Man's World. Hardly anyone in any kind of decent shape, very few serious about working out. And not a whole lot of friendly people, even. There was a certain camaraderie at Man's World and also at the Gold's I belonged to in Vegas. Not at Retro.

Which is a big part of why I built my home gym. That, plus the 30 minute drive in each direction to get there.

So, I know what you mean. Don't know what to make of it, except that I know lots of people - and not just kids - burn a lot of time playing video games.

Funny story about that: I used to go to the Swap Meet at the drag strip that's about an hour away. A buddy had "a spot" and was selling various garage related things, including a 200 lb anvil. These kids (20 somethings) bought it and had a Radio Flyer wagon to tote it with, but had no idea how they were going to get the thing off the ground and into the wagon. My buddy, 50 or so at the time, squatted down, picked it up and set it in the wagon, no sweat. These kids were astonished. Even exclaimed, "Holy shit!" Coz, my buddy, looks at them, hits a double biceps and says, "I didn't get these from playing video games!" lol!!!

Seeing a another Bodybuilder like myself in the gym is like seeing a unicorn

I love the story of your buddy and the anvil. That's the kind of thing that makes kids into future bodybuilders or powerlifters.

I'm in Daytona, and all we have is Spring Break, Bike Week, Speed Week, and Biketoberfest. Otherwise this place sucks to live. But they are building like crazy here. My gyms are always busy. I just learned to schedule around it, so I know which gym to hit on which day and which time.

I'm beggining to think the sub-culture of this farm town is issue. I should really sell the gym and open a scumbag bar where there be more toothless people than a hockey team. I'd make TON of cash, probably buy that poor guy Bill Gates a cup of coffee out of sympathy alone!!

Little country gym I'm at for 6 more days is always packed but my home gym that is 7x bigger in Asheville is always a ghost town

You're right, it wouldn't be a surprise if one of them went home and signed up at a gym that weekend! Lol!

It's not bad here... most everyone at least tries to play the part. There are alot of cross fit types and some physique oriented people. Now that I'm back in school you see more fitness oriented people than you did when I was last in college in 01-03. Granted I'm pretty far toward the bodybuilding end of the spectrum people are pretty nice to me and people seem to go out of their way to talk to me. I'm sure some notice that I never wear anything but tank tops and cargo shorts, but I'm 36. I wear what I want. I just happen to look better in a tank top than most. Now don't get me started on those tyes that literally carry a gallon of water everywhere they go... you can't tell me you enjoy drinking that piss warm water all day. My biggest daily concern is where am I going to get more ice to put in my water cup...

The town where my farm is , is so small that we do not even have one stoplight. Just a sign, lmao.

Where I live though, it is better, about 45 min away on the bayou(Instead of river swamp). There are zero gyms that are serious and only commercial crap. I hate it.
