Does strength gain always correlate to muscle gain?

This is one of the fundamental ways I judge my progress, but sometimes I wonder if just because I'm able to use more weight did I really gain muscle? With all the talk of stimulants, neural connections, and even intra cellular leverage caused by water retention it has me wondering. What's your take on this. How can you REALLY tell if what you're doing is working?

No, strong doesn't mean big. This is a perfect example.

That's what I find confusing. I know I have been stronger on some things, but one of my sole ways of determining progress (actual muscle) is by log books

Yeah strength doesn't correlate to muscle mass. I mean it's generally a good gauge for people from the outside looking in, but it most definatly doesn't mean shit for the most part.

Like nuk nuk said I was way stronger years ago when I power lifted and then when I got into bodybuilding I LOOKED twice as strong as I did when I power lifted , but wasn't nearly as strong.

not always but it does sometimes..when your younger and just getting started I think it does..but as you get older, and have more years training...not so much
