DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone)

>DHEA or dehydroepiandrosterone>, is a hormone produced naturally from cholesterol in the adrenal glands of males and females. It is a precursor to the male sex hormone testosterone, so in essence it’s a prohormone.

>The human body produces very little DHEA until about the age of seven, when production increases rapidly. It peaks in the mid-20s and starts to decline in the early 30s, thus sets the trend with testosterone. By the mid-70s, DHEA production has dropped by about 80-90%.(1)

>DHEA was first identified in 1934 and was sold over the counter mainly as a weight loss aid until the late 1980s. Then the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified DHEA as a drug, making it available by prescription only. The FDA reversed itself in 1994, reclassifying DHEA as a dietary supplement obtainable without a prescription.(2)

>A 1994 study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego looked at 30 middle-age men and women who took 50 mg of DHEA a day for three months. The test subjects generally reported an improved sense of well-being, increased energy, enhanced sex drive, and an improved ability to deal with stress.

There are very few large, well-designed human studies testing the health effects of DHEA supplements. For example, there is not enough scientific evidence to rate the effectiveness of DHEA supplements in treating adrenal insufficiency, depression, HIV/AIDS, Addison’s disease, adrenal fatigue, menopausal symptoms, heart disease, breast cancer, infertility, and diabetes according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

>The supplement industry has of course recognized DHEA’s weight loss potential and in turn, expounded upon this trait. Another “problem” facing DHEA users is it’s aromatizing / masculizing potential. With so many benifits for both men and women 7-keto-DHEA or DHEA-Acetate-7-one or 3-acetoxy-androst-5- ene-7,17-dione was born. This is a by-product of dehydroepiandrosterone. DHEA is a “parent hormone” produced by glands near the kidneys But unlike DHEA, 7-keto-DHEA is not converted to steroid hormones such as androgen and estrogen.(3)

>People take 7-keto-DHEA to increase metabolic rate and body heat production to promote swift weight loss. 7-keto-DHEA is also used to improve lean body mass and build muscle, increase the activity of the thyroid gland, boost the immune system, enhance memory, and slow aging.

>Although the advantages of 7-keto-DHEA are evident, I still read many people confused as to which compound is better suited for them. >7-Keto DHEA is a safer and more potent form of DHEA, the well-known “mother hormone”, a substance known to ameliorate the effects of aging on many body functions. 7 Keto is NOT DHEA. It is a natural metabolite of DHEA meaning that our bodies eventually convert DHEA into 7 Keto DHEA in the skin and kidneys.

>The most noticable and considered variance between DHEA and 7 Keto DHEA is that 7 Keto DHEA is already converted DHEA, in other words, a spike in estrogen and testosterone as seen via DHEA administration does not (in theory) occour. In fact, studies have shown that DHEA in it’s “solo” chemical state can raise blood levels of testosterone by much as 10 times above normal which is the reason DHEA has been rumored to be a mass builder, and proven as a libido enhancer for men going through andropause or PCT.

>>DHEA supplementation has been under the preverbial microscope for many years and this author has noticed the majority of studies and research cases have a more optamistic conclusion than negative feedback when it comes to DHEA’s use in humans to treat spacific symptoms, ailments. I have been an experienced advocate for DHEA’s use in the PCT or post cycle therapy phase of an anabolic steroid cycle. I find there are more who are enthusiastic about proving me wrong than supporting my simple hypothesis that DHEA is useful in a steroid users recovery.

>>If I were spouting rhetoric that DHEA aided in reversing a suppressed HPTA then I would be worthy of the criticisim I tend to be subject to each time I pitch my ideas on the subject….however, I have never made such a claim. I simply feel DHEA, along with proper PCT meds, can ease the difficult time between natural testosterone production suppression andwo renewal. I have caught some major flack for suggesting DHEA as a drug useful in PCT (even in a limited capaticity) but I believe it can be an asset
