2023 Rogue Invitational Event One — “Texas Heavy” Recap
Below are recaps for each division in Event One:

Women’s Run
The anticipated return of six-time Fittest Woman on Earth® Tia-Clair Toomey was met with her leading the opening of the race alongside reigning Fittest Woman on Earth® Laura Horvath. The pack remained tight early, but aerial shots replayed a lengthening of the group.

Horvath and Toomey broke away from the field by several handfuls of body lengths by the fifth minute. Horvath, notoriously strong in grunt-work-based events, set her own pace, leaving Toomey behind by the seventh minute, but the six-time CrossFit Games champ recognized the pace change and turned on the jets.

By the eighth minute, Toomey was attempting to overtake the lead. It was clearly a two-woman race by the time the 50-pound bags flew off the shoulders. Without the additional weight, Toomey overtook the lead, and Gabriela Miga?a moved into second position as Horvath slowed.

Toomey and Miga?a lapped Shelby Neal, who was in last place. Toomey opened up a lead as the file mile got underway. Horvath fell out of the lead pace entirely, and it was clear that it was Toomey’s event to lose.

By the final sled pull, Toomey was all by her lonesome out front. What a way to return to competition after becoming a mother — a dominant opening event for the Australian.

Men’s Run
The men’s run was all Roman Khrennikov early. He is known for his prowess in grunt-work events like this and is no slouch on long runs. He wasted no time exploding from the gate to set the early pace.

By the second minute, Jelle Hoste caught up to Khrennikov, as did the reigning Fittest Man on Earth® Jeffrey Adler. Those stayed in the lead well into the fifth minute. Travis Mayer led the rest of the pack that was way a wide margin behind the lead trio.

While the field expanded continually as the event progressed, the overall lead closed as the burden of the weight charred the opening flames. The pace slowed from a run to a trot.

The lead was gone by the eighth minute and half the field moved together, except Jonne Koski, who dropped the bag and fell to the ground while grabbing his right hamstring. By the 11th minute, Koski was back on his feet but in deep last place.

Once the 100-pound bag fell off the shoulders, Hoste darted out to a commanding lead. The front camera displayed Hoste as though he was running the event by himself by the 10th minute. Khrennikov and Adler were almost hand-in-hand in second place, but it was Hoste’s event to concede.

By the final run, Hoste was unwilling to slow his pace but couldn’t fend off the fatigue. By the 17th minute, Adler’s clean stride enabled him to overtake the lead and distance himself from Hoste. Khrennikov remained a ways back in third place.

Adler’s pace was too much for Hoste to contend with, and Adler, from behind, claims an opening event win in Round Rock.
