Event Six Recap
For the first time this Games, the men competed first. In heat one, Malheiros got out to a slight lead after the first round of muscle-ups. He held it through the GHD sit-ups as Briant, Richelme, and Fikowski jockeyed for second position two reps back. Richelme upped the pace and took over the lead at the start of round two.
The box jump overs proved more difficult than anticipated as athletes were not allowed to place their hands on the boxes. It was all lower body. Richelme let Zenoni and Briant catch up for a share of the lead. The commentary team discussed the long run-up technique in the box jumps for Mertens to compensate for his 5’4? height being a natural disadvantage against a 42-inch box.
By the start of the third round, Zenoni held a 10-rep lead. He completed the muscle-ups by the 9:40-mark. A few athletes received no reps jumping over the pig as they were not allowed to twist in the air — they had to land square with their back to the pig. Zenoni reached the final GHDs first, still with a double-digit rep lead, and was attacked the lunges. He went unbroken for nearly three-fourths of the course. Zenoni finished in 14:18.12 for the heat one win.
Men’s Heat Two
Judging by the athletes’ heavy breathing, the 81-degree heat was doing some damage. Nonetheless, heat two got underway. Garard aimed to extend his 78-point overall lead coming into the event. He stayed in the mix of athletes setting the pace. Garard took over the lead by a pair of reps on the log.
Saxon Panchik kept pace with Garard at the GHDs, with Medeiros, Koski, Ohlsen, and Gudmundsson a handful of reps behind them. Panchik went unbroken through the muscle-ups and claimed the lead for himself to start the box jumps. He gave up no time before starting his second set of GHDs all by himself.
Nearly 18 reps behind Panchik were Vellner, Gudmundsson, Kwant, and Garard. They all held pace with each other as they watched Panchik head back to the rig for his final set of muscle-ups. Panchik was alone still on the muscle-ups as the eight-minute mark passed by. By the 10-minute mark, Panchik began his final set of GHDs — more than a dozen reps ahead of second-place Kwant.
Saxon reached his lunges just after 11 minutes on the clock, and he got right to work. He went more than halfway unbroken with over three minutes to spare against Zenoni’s heat-one-winning time. Panchik had to break right before the finish line but it was still a big win for him as he crossed at 12:40.00.
Medeiros put on a last-effort surge in the lunges to take second in the event with Garard moments behind him. Kwant got in fourth with Gudmundsson right on his tail. The top 10 finishes in heat two were faster than Zenoni’s time in heat one.
The Rest of Day Three
There is still one more event to come on Day Three of competition for the Individuals. At the time of this article’s publication, Event Seven has not yet been revealed. There will be a cut of 10 athletes in each Individual division before the final day of competition on Aug. 7, 2022. Event Seven is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. CDT.
