At that meet, Grigsby deadlifted 457.5 kilograms (1,008.6 pounds) on his second attempt to set the record in the 110-kilogram raw class. On the final pull, Grigsby approached the barbell with his usual sumo stance, grabbed it with an overhand hook grip, and pulled it quickly to full lockout. Once the head judge gave the down command, Grigsby returned the bar to the floor, and all three judges gave white lights for the effort.
This was the second world record set at the meet. Earlier in the day, 100-kilogram lifter Joe Sullivan chipped his own raw squat world record by one kilogram to set the new mark at 386 kilograms (851.1 pounds).
