how much cardio?

I aim at losing fat. I find that if I do any more than 30min early in the season, I start losing muscle definition and I look flat. I am not extremely muscular, but I like to hold onto my hard earned muscle...hehe! Anyway, INTENSE INTERVALS of 20 mins(warm up 5 cool down 5-10) really kick my ass and burn fat! You really have to work hard...I almost feel sick at some points. I always do cardio after weight training (except for leg days) about 4/week.
 
I've done up to an hour a day when trying to get really lean; I think you have to find a balance between diet and cardio that you can tolerate still lose fat. I tried doing no cardio for a while but hit a plateau with the super low calories so I increased my calories a bit and did cardio for an hour a day; that routine helped me lose 3-4 more pounds.
 
I am not in the school of thought that cardio is needed for fat loss. I have yet to use it but am considering doing 2 days/week of HIIT during my cut this spring.
