Sleep Apnea Leads to Erection Problems

By Steve Blechman and Tom Fahey, Ed.D.

Some bodybuilders can’t sleep when they go on a steroid cycle. Testosterone (and testosterone-like drugs) can cause sleep apnea, in which you stop breathing periodically during sleep, which in turn causes a fall in blood oxygen. Sleep apnea can destroy sexual function. Many people with this condition have trouble getting erections. Also, they’re often so tired that they lose all desire for sex. Many also snore, which can cause major problems in a relationship. Estrogen treatments decrease snoring but are accompanied by some good news and some bad news. The good news is that if you take estrogen, you won’t snore as badly; the bad news is that your bench press will drop to 135 pounds, and you will grow breasts. More traditional treatments include weight loss, dental appliances to decrease air resistance in the throat, CPAP to increase airway pressure, and surgery. (HealthSCOUT.com)

Snoring: Roadblock to Good Sex. It’s hard to have good sex if you sleep in a different room than your partner. Unfortunately, nearly 80 percent of couples in which one partner snores loudly sleep in separate rooms. Snoreeze, a British company that markets a snoring remedy, interviewed 1,000 couples. Ten percent said snoring harmed their relationship. Most snorers don’t sleep well, so they often walk around so tired during the day that they have little energy for sex when they get home. Snoring can be very loud and annoying – the world record for snoring is 112 decibels, the same as a jet engine. Treatment may include losing weight, using nose sprays before bed, nose strips to open nasal passages, and surgery to tighten tissues in the back of the throat. (BBC News, published online)
