Dangers Of Using Caffeine To Enhance Bodybuilding Performance

LONDON, ENGLAND – May 21, 1998 -- A bodybuilder who took high doses of caffeine to increase his stamina and performance sustained seizures and temporary kidney damage and required admission to hospital, reports a study in the Journal of Accident and Emergency Medicine.

The report cites a case of a 28-year-old fitness instructor who had taken around 35 caffeine tablets, washed down with strong coffee, for three days before a visit to the gym. After completing strenuous circuit training, he collapsed unconscious and had a seizure for 15 minutes. Other symptoms included feeling very anxious, headache, palpitations, nausea and insomnia. His kidney function was also temporarily impaired. The levels of caffeine in his blood measured 12.3 mg per litre: acute poisoning occurs at 15 mg while levels of 25 mg can be fatal.


Caffeine is readily available in the form of wake-up pills and is also marketed to -- and used by -- athletes as a performance enhancer (ergogenic aid). Studies show that caffeine does enhance performance in endurance sports, but that this is not related to dose. The use of caffeine has been reported in successful suicides and accidental poisonings.


“As a constituent of tea, coffee and new stimulant drinks, caffeine is probably the most widely-used drug in the world. However, it can cause serious toxicity and death,” the authors write.
