Third baseman Aaron Boone, who demanded Wednesday that the payroll-slashing Reds trade him, got his wish hours before the deadline Thursday when he was dealt to the Yankees for left-handed pitchers Brandon Claussen and Charlie Manning and cash.
Also Thursday, the Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates got together for a second trade this month, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports. Boston acquired right-hander Jeff Suppan, reliever Brandon Lyon and pitching prospect Anastacio Martinez from Pittsburgh for minor leaguers Freddy Sanchez and Mike Gonzalez. Lyon was traded by Boston to Pittsburgh in a two-for-two pitching swap on July 22.
