building calfs

I used to get sore like that, but seems like I rarely do anymore. I tried doing that flex until cramp thing, but I can't get my calves to cramp. I'll keep trying. Maybe I should do calves more than once a week. I'm not joking about the poundage I mentioned above. 580 is almost like nothing now (if that is really what it is on the machine I use) yet my calves aren't really that big, only about 15.5". Maybe just increasing the reps will help. I don't think I can use a much heavier weight without killing my back.

I think it must be your form. I can make my calves sore as hell with bodyweight calf raises.

I'm not so sure because I go through the full range of movement even pausing at the top and bottom, but I'll look into it--leg day is tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

Knees locked at the bottom, holding the stretch for 1 sec. As you move up, you unlock the knees half way up the movement, all in a flowing movement, so you reach the top with the knees slightly bent. There you contract the calf as hard as you can for 1 or 2 sec. Then as you go down, flowingly, half way down, you lock the knees again for the bottom stretch.

Yup, sounds like what I do although I may perform it slightly faster than that. I'll slow it down today and see how it goes. Thanks, BigA.

Man, I couldn't find this thread again. I tried doing my calf sets a lot slower exactly like BigA said to do, and I still got through 580 lbs for 10 reps though it was a lot more difficult. I did get a little more sore, but it went away after a day. I think I added a bit of size though--they seem pumped up since that workout. Perhaps if I add some lighter weight reps and just keep on going until I can't go anymore. Maybe I'll post a pic of my calf.

Well, I've done the calf workout twice now slowed down as BigA recommended. I did get a little more sore, and amazingly, I swear my calves have grown just a tad. I think it's working. I'll add in that calf-flexing exercise too and see if it helps even more.

I'm going to try the calf flex workout while sitting at my desk and see if I can get them to grow... I've got the time I figure why not. If it doesn't work sitting I may have to lay down in my office but it wouldn't be the first time I got up and close and personal with the floor in my office... hahaha
