I've been using an OTC product from the Vitamin Shoppe, I think it's called Syntriol(sp?) I'll look when I get home. I also make sure I'm getting my ALA's, Fish Oils and antioxidants. Just had a suprise blood test for a life insurance policy I took out and everything came back fine so I guess somethings working
OK I found it, it's called Sytrinol.
this is an exerpt from one of the sites that sells it:
Now Sytrinol Cholesterol Formula contains the patented and clinically tested ingredient, Sytinol. Sytrinol is a proprietary formula consisting polymethoxylated flavones (PMF's) from citrus, palm tocotrienols and other proprietary constituents. Studies have shown the Sytrinol helps maintain cholesterol and triglyceride levels already within the healthy range. NOW Sytrinol Cholesterol Formula also contains Policosanol, a blend of long-chain fatty alcohols (LCFA) derived from sugar cane for its synergistic effect. In addition, Milk Thistle and Alpha Lipoic Acid have been included for their antioxidant effects, as well as to support liver health. This combination of ingredients makes Now Sytrinol Cholesterol Formula an ideal supplement for naturally supporting overall cardiovascular function.*
No personal experience with cycles, but I am taking a prescription omega-3 supplement called Lovaza. Four of these gel capsules ED, and my lipids have improved and my joints definitely have benefited from the anti-inflamitory effect of omega-3's. Can't remember the specifics, but HDL went from mid/upper teens to mid thirties. LDL went down as well. If you have a decent prescription plan, I would recommend anyone give them a try. There are no negative sides (that I am aware of) and you know exactly what you are getting, as opposed to anything you buy from an unregulated supplement company.
The only other thing I would suggest is niacin (B3). This stuff is proven to lower cholesterol, but some people can not stand the flushing experienced while taking the necessary dosages. There are no-flush versions available, but not sure the science behind them is supported. I do know that certain pharma companies are working on a no-flush version that should be available soon. At least then, you can view the studies and know what your getting with the script.
there's a ton of things you can use to improve your lipid profile.
I use:
20mg/day policosanol
1/8tsp (2x/day) tumeric
1/8tsp (2x/day) curcumin
1/8tsp (2x/day) green tea extract
1g (2x/day) gugguls
Metumucil 2x/day (a triple serving each time -- get the sugar free stuff. soluble fiber is great for lowering LDL)
3g/day fishoil is good (not taking it currently)
can also use: red rice yeast, ginger, lecithin
the shit though is: IM Phosphatidyl choline (NEVER had better lipid profile than when i was using this stuff)
