I've been interested in getting back into martial arts. Only this time... I want to do some actual fighting.

So anyway, i have a gym here that does muay thai, brazilian jiu-jitsu. Its exactly what i want, no kata, no belts, no b.s. Just put me in a ring and show me where to apply it.

any thoughts on this?

I think that is perfect what you want out of it. It sounds liek you want to skip the intro and basics adn get right to the meat and potatos of fighting. Go for it!!

i got into a long discussion with someone here at work. His 12 year old kid is a black belt. I swear every school brain washes there students into believing they have the best art. He went up and down about how master so-n-so is the best… bla.. bla..bla

my knew philosophy on martial arts is nobody is a warrior unless they actually fight.

Anyone can look tough on paper...
I have seen many "black belt" guys get their ass kicked in bar fights...
A warrior knows when to strike and trained martial artist waits for the strikes..
He who hits first hits last..

I bounce too.

Lets just say learning how not to get hit doesnt do much for you when you do....

they want 110 dollars a month! thats a little expensive... dont you guys think?

its unlimited though, you can go every day if you want.

it is definitely a little high, but the places like that in OKC charge around $75 for unlimited access. I think it depends on where you R at. Find out what that includes and if it includes access to their gym, etc...see if there are some things that you can get rid of to make it more affordable for you. And I completely agree with the quote that no one can be a warrior unless they fight. That's why the most effective training for short term training for self-defense is not any kind of martial art, but Adrenaline Stress training. It gets people who have never been in a fight to experience one without really having the opportunity to get hurt real bad. You can be as well trained of a martial artists as you want, but if you've never been faced with a situation that gets your parasympathetic nervous system pumping like that you don't know how you'll react and if the other person has experienced this and is used to it you are dead meat!

Yeah the prices definately vary, but if you find the right place it's very well worth it. I got back into Muay Thai a few months back and it's the best decision I've ever made. Go for it bro!

yeah location has everything to do with the price
here is a good little trick if you get back into muay thai

instead of using thai oil (somewhat expensive and hard to find) and rolling a bottle on your shins to kill the nerves try this instead...
use ICY HOT on the shins and a fuckin wooden cookie roller-sounds wierd I know, but with the cookie roller you can get your whole upper body behind it. and then take a chunk of wood and smack the lower part of your shins with it to stimulate bone on bone contact

3 months of this and I'm back to kicking trees...serioiusly, I'll find a pine tree a little bigger than my wrist (has to have some give to it) and then rub ICY HOT on my shins drink a 6 pack of beer and kick the tree until I'm limping
the goal isn't to damage the bone it's to deaden the nerves and harden the shins by creating calcium deposits on it
shave the bark off the tree and wrap a small layer of cotton cloth around it so that you don't get all the sap on your shins

I trained briefly with an MMA fighter who specialized in mui thai and he used to bring these guys in to the gym who were from Thailand and we'd train with them for a few hours. For as tough and as talented as they all were they were all super nice guys and very cool.

You should negotiate with the gym about the price, no doubt that's a good price if you were to go all the time but explain to them that you will only be there once or twice a week or whatever and you want a price appropriate for both of you. Good luck big boy.

We used to pair up and bang shin to shin. At first it fucking HURT - but it really
does deaden the nerves after a while. Just my opinion (remember I'm a old guy)
but you have to watch that crazy training - it toughen's your body but over time
it takes it's toll. I forget what the average fighting life of those hard core muy-tai
guys but it is surprisingly short. The older guys I know who trained crazy like that
are paying for it now. just my opinion - I used to be one of those crazy fucks and
if you told me that then, I'd laugh and tell you to blow it out your ass - I was
invincible. LOL

ive takin some ju jitz zu classes. Also some boxing. Its alot of fun. You would be amazed of how much harder you can hit if you just know how lol. When i started i was strong and thought i hit hard. My teacher was like 150 pounds and could knock my arm off. bout 2 weeks in i think i was prob hitting 2x's harder lol. jjz was my fav. though so much technical stuff and it was just a blast. that is a little high on prices though. But it is whenever you wanna go so thats cool.
