i prefer using the plates under the heels and doing narrow because that hits more of the quad overall IMO and that "feels" normal to me. plus the range of motion is greater.
 
I'm going to give this narrow stance a try. I usually go wide and low, but it'll be interesting to see the diff a narrow stance makes.
 
thats funny, since my last post in here I love doing smith squats now.
