I know there are some gun experts on here. I've never owned a gun, mostly because I didn't like having one in the house with a small child. But, he's 10 now and thanks to video games, he's quite a gun enthusiast himself. I'm looking to get a handgun for home protection and to take to the shooting range now and then. I don't know how much, if any, I'll ever carry it. And I'm hoping to start under $500. Any suggestions?

I've been thinking just a .22 pistol. Would I need more than that? I looked today at a huge local gun store and the number of options overwelmed me a bit and I didn't really have time to talk to anyone.

Do you have a buddy with guns?? A .22 is pretty small, but it could kill someone. Personally I carry a Glock 36 single stack .45. I love a 9mm though. Super easy to shoot, like a BB gun. I do most of my stuff with buddies on about 150 acres and use a 9mm and my AR. 9mm rounds are also super cheap.

Well, I'm in Tennessee, so tons of people have guns. But, I've never really talked to anyone about them. So, I don't even know which of my friends have them.

$500 is about what you are going to pay for for a good Glock or Springfield Armory semi auto. A good revolver is gong to be around $300 for a .38 special of .357 magnum.

If you are not planning on being a frequent shooter and just want it solely for home protection I would just buy a little snub by .38 Special revolver. Easy to use and clean and will ruin someone's life if they come breaking in to your home. Then as you get use to it if you choose to be a more avid shooter and just investing in them (they never lose their value) you can by something like a single action/double action handgun.

I would also look at online gun sites who sell used police issued Glocks or guns. They usually range from $200-300 a piece because most police agencies rotate guns every few years and most if those are in excellent condition and you can count on it that they were well maintained.

i would say a .38 revolver would be the easiest as it's a revolver and it real easy to see if it's loaded or not, no chamber for a bullete to be hidden in. a 9mm would be a good option as well i would pick one that you like and have held as well as one with decent priced ammo.

go with the .38 revelover at first, this is what my wife has...they are small, pack a punch, easy to hide, easy to clean, you won't have to worry about jam

All good points, but revolvers also limit you to 5 or 6 rounds. Given your lack of training and experience its highly likely that you may fire all 5 or 6 rounds and at best end up with a glancing wound. A full size 9mm Glock holds 17 rounds.
No matter what I would invest some time at the range and if at all possible, some time one on one with an instructor in an open range doing drills.
If you pull a gun on someone it is a life a death scenario. At that point is not spending a couple hundred on a firearms expert for a day really worth it?!
I've seen a guy take 3 rounds in the gut from a .38 at 10 feet and just get pissed... All five rounds were fired...

IMO the case for a revolver is completely backwards. The most trained guys may be OK with 6 or 7 rounds, but not an amateur. Get a Glock. Learn the rules and never stray from them. Do some training. Get to the range at least once a month. Learn how to disassemble and reassemble the weapon like the back of your hand. Firearms are specifically protected by our Constitution. That should give you an idea as to how important they are to our way of life...

all very good points and I agree 100% I guess something that I forgot to mention is that my wife, also, has a S&W 9mm-so when the 38 special runs out she will have the 9mm to fall back on "in the panic room"

all in the panic room and all while waiting 20 minutes for the 911 call to go through and the police to show up

question no 1) is this an emergency???
answer) no I just called to see what the fucking weather was going to be tomorrow

question no 2) please remain calm help is on the way. Where are you located?

gives the attacker and his buddies plenty of time to watch Pier Morgan on CNN debate gun control and then rape and pillage and do whatever they want

if you want a firearm just for home defense get a shotgun...with min. training you can tear multiple attackers in half

there is a saying, I like my pistol but I love my shotgun

Lol!! I just shit myself!! Absolutely! I agree with the shotgun. I've got a Mossberg riot gun in between the mattress and the bed rails on my side. There's seven in the tube. I've gone over it with Silk a hundred times. If someone comes in, grab it, click off the safety, point it into the hallway and pull the trigger. Chamber another and repeat. It's loaded with #9 buckshot and slugs alternating. Silks also got a Glock 17 9mm and a Ruger 10/22 takedown. Then I've got my toys :wink:

I tried to teach my wife how to use my Mossberg, that was like watching a monkey fuck a football...this was dry firing drills

that's when I decided it was better to go with pistols...

Yeah, I definitely agree that a shotgun is best for protection. But, I also want something that I can have a little fun with. There aren't any indoor ranges very close to me, but my wife's family is only an hour and a half away and they are out in the country, so I could just as easily go there and shoot and save the range fees.

Everyone seems to agree that there is no stopping at one, once you start buying guns. So, I'm thinking I might start with a pistol and then add a revolver later on.

I've got several people on the search for a 9mm pistol. One of my uncles buys a lot of guns, so he is keeping an eye out for a good deal. One of my dad's friends runs an auction house, so he sees a lot of guns go through. Also, there is a big gun show in town this weekend, so I might check it out.

peronsally i wouldnt buy from anyone that has to register the item now days, with the current political climate if i bought something i would buy it from a friend or something i wouldnt want my name on a list of people who have guns.

I have a old shotgun that is automatic. I bought a new one just for the cocking sound. "CLICK-CLIIICK".
While back I heard what sounded like someone in my backyard. I opened my upstairs window and yelled out.
Total quiet. I got my shotgun to the window and cocked it. "CLICK - CLIIIICK!!!!" All I heard was someone
jumping fences as fast as they could. My dad always had guns but never showed me anything so I'm not
gun savy. I just got a mini 9 (any info on those would be appreciated) for the house. A 38 snub sounds
good (im a cheap sob) True about the 22's. Years ago when I moved back into the neighborhood I grew up
in I pulled up to the corner liquor store. Guy I used to hang out with in grammer school (Big bad crazy MFer)
was pacing back and forth in front covered in blood. He was pissed. Asked him what the hell was going on.
He said he chased off some guys earlier and they came back in a van, opened the side door and shot him with
a 22. He was hit 5 times. He said when he got up they just about shit and took off. I told him I would take
him to emergency, he said no thanks, ambulance was on the way. That made me think twice on getting a 22. lol

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. But, then if you get a carry permit, they have you on record anyway, I suppose. But, at least they wouldn't know how many guns you had.

The political climate in this country is changing quickly. Brush up on your laws. Also remember that should anyone come to your door to take your guns, a simple "they were stolen" ends it unless they have a search warrant. With Obama talking about presidential orders it may become more grey (read corrupt)

they can do a gun grab at anytime they want, going door to door without a search warrant as long as martial law is declared. Since Obama passed the NDAA he can declare martial law anywhere anytime and use foreign troops if need be...kinda like what Japan did to China in WW2

my advise to you since youre not that well versed on guns is go with something simple. .357 revolver and if you want to shoot a smaller round out if it you can still go with a .38 through the same pistol......if you are really set on using a semi auto pistol make sure you put about 500rds through it. and become comfortable with troubleshooting gun jams. just in case you have a situation where you need to use it and it jams on you...
