I read yesterday that the GOP blocked a Dem bill that would tax any windfall profits on the 5 largest oil companies, however these companies could avoid this if they would invest this in alternative fuels. Apparently the GOP wants to drill in the coastal waters off of Alaska and start producing more of our own, the Dem's want to take away money from companies that made I think over 36 million more in profits than a couple of years ago and funnel it back to us and/or our economy. I say do them both and maybe we get ourselves out of this mess.

We went back home 3 times last month due to a family emergency, having to drive back here for my last exam, and then my brother's wedding. All in all it cost us a little over $1500 just to drive home and back 3 times.

you're gonna see alot of 3 cylinder turbo'ed cars popping up from manufacturer's. They will be very fuel efficient, but STILL cheaper than hybrids.
Superchargers are a thing of the past (very fuel in-efficient). Large motors, even v6s will be history.

whats funny is EVERYONE herein TX drive a truck or SUV. They cant sell them because they are all new and the resell value is much less than they owe. So they gotta keep paying $100+ a tank no matter what. Muhahaha!

This is correct except that 36 million figure should read 36 billion. lol. There is a ton of oil in the US still but they wont pass the bills right now to drill because it's going to offend liberals and nature conservationists. Honestly, the oil companies have the technology to limit if not completely eliminate the destruction of the surrounding areas. It's not like the old days of destroying the earth with oil spilling all over the place. This would take a lot of demand off of foreign oil and would give the US economy a huge boost. There is a huge amount in Canada, the US, and off-shore. In the amount of multi-billion barrels of oil. It's a shame that the US uses something like 25% of the worlds energy output.

Drew and B2S is correct. We will be seeing lots of new smaller cars that give much higher MPG in the future. I think I saw commercials recently for regular cars to be using about 60mpg. We are going to turn into Europe soon. I'm afraid that if demand drops too low that oil will actually stay the same or increase even though it doesn't jive with the whole supply/demand theory. Shit, it's already like that.

At that point, you are alot more likely to get liberals to reduce their opposing to drilling for oil in Alaska. because the gov't doesnt regulate the price of gas. In mexico, its still $2.50 or so a gallon. WHY? pesos are worth less than even the american dollar is now, and they use alot of american dollars there too. Why is gas not skyrocketing? Because the govt regulates the price.

In america, which is the heart of capitalism (espeically with a way right republican like bush in office) big businesses are given free roam. Only a monopoly is illegal. But if ALL the companies jack up the price equally, then its not a monopoly?! WTF?

nothing is being done because republicans dont want anything done. One of a republicans main job IMO, is making sure their business buddies make as much money as possible. Thats why conservatives wont raise business taxes...they reduce them heavily. 10% reduction in taxes equals billions in extra profit for a huge company.

I actually work for one of the big oil co's and I know a lot about all this shit. Speculators are driving the prices up. OPEC drove the prices up originally to get more money, but now speculators are causing this. Hopefully those fucking future traders get raped when or if oil drops in price as demand declines. Alaska is a huge untapped source. Canada has a lot of cheaper oil. The US has a huge reserve of oil and gas that they are just stockpiling that could be released if they wanted to do so. There are other deep water reserves just waiting to be tapped.

It's the combination of government, OPEC, global fear, and speculators that are causing all of this. Demand is decreasing so therefore price should decrease. As you can see it isn't helping out gas or oil prices yet. Hit me up if you want to know more about all of this. I've reviewed many hours of House and Senate hearings on the topic of oil and gas concerns/prices. It's a bunch of shit. You would be surprised. Honestly I don't blame it all on the oil companies, but if they wanted to they have the power to change it as well as the US government. It's a shame we are so dependent on oil that everyone is afraid to rock the boat, but something similar will happen like in the late 70's or early 80's. Demand will drop and prices will drop slightly. We probably wont get back to $2.00 gas again, but hopefully it drops quite a bit.

RidICuLOUS Gas Prices! I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee and it is a gas guzzler. I bought a 2008 Honda Civic last week because after doing the math I realized I am better off replacing my Jeep! So now I gotta find someone that wants to by a Jeep with no AC in !? lol

I am loving the Honda Civic, it is great on gas and fun to drive! may not be a Lexus or BMW or whatever, but it gets me where I need to go for half the cost!

Most of my friends make an average of 500/week ans spend $150 on gas to get back and forth from work......thats $600 a month. People with mortgages, car payments, credit cards jus cant make it.....If what they say about $6-10 per gallon comes to fruition and people dont takme to the streets and fight the power welll.............it's gonna gte ugly. Many people will lose everything.

certain school districts in WASHINGTON STATE are only having school 4 days a week to save money for the budget... (that's just GREAT, that's what we need... american children with LESS education) ... i think they are adding 1hr a day to each school day, but having 3 day weekends....

According to news reports oil will close 2008 at 200 per barrel and that will put our gas prices at about 6.25 per gallon for low grade..........And the government has known since the 70's this problem was going to occur and WTF has the government done? Nothing but get rich off of the blue collar ass busting public......
