What would you absolutely have to have to make it work? I mean cables or maybe some type of multi station machine. Something less than 3 or 4k if possible. Im talking bare bone necessities.

I would have to have the smith machine squat rack / bench press , with that you pretty much can do every things

I would go smith or just a bad ass power rack you can do more with it then you can a smith. the power block dumbells up to whatever they go to then start buying the heavier ones slowly. power rack, bench that goes from incline to shoulder press to decline if you must. thats a great start can do a ton with that. Then a pulley machine with adjustable cable from high to low.

This right here  When I had my home gym (prior to selling it) I went into a Chicago Home fitness spent about 1,500 on the smith machine, which also had all the other attachments, pull up bar, cables, pec deck, etc. Then i went ahead and got all the rubber hex head dumbbells upto 100 pounds. Of course leaving out the weights sizes I would never use. Total I think I spent was around 2500 for everything and i could do everything. I also bought a leg extension machine from Bodysolid (fitness factory outlet - one of my customers so I got a good deal) that also converted into a reverse curl machine..

^ ^ ^ Sounds like an awesome gym. I'd probably do the same thing.

Smith was for sure. I would no doubt get a heavy set of power blocks or something like that too. I was thinking about something for leg extensions and something to do tri extensions, pulldowns, cable rows etc. Ive found some smiths with more than one station.

Power rack. What can you not do with a power rack?

Next would be dumbells. A semi-full set (2.5 lbs-100lbs) will land you a grand though :(

Actually, I take it all back. Watching ESPN, I just saw an ad for the ShakeWeight--it's only 19.95 and you can get the body you always wanted. So I vote ShakeWeight; call now!

I'm possibly going to turn a room into a home gym... Just for the days where I'm too rushed to go to the gym and can have a solid hour at home. For this a large rack of free weights are important for me.
