What two and three year olds need is a mommy and a daddy, not an institution. I think we just have to disagree on this one, but I firmly believe that MY children are MY responsibility, not the schools, not societys, or anyone else. I think we are destroying the whole notion of family, and I think we have bought into the notion that success means everything. It's our way of justifying juggling three jobs and having all sorts of material crap.I know, I'm ranting. Bad hair day....

All parents raise their kids differently. We should respect that you guys. All kids are different too. Some might do better in pre-school and some may not.

Obviously people disagree... and talking about stuff like this can get out of hand really quickly. I STRONGLY suggest that if you'd like to continue the discussion on home school vs school, or the merits of detractions of daycare, that you take it to email or pm.

When good threads go south. My son loved pre school. I live in an area where there are no children so pre school 3 times a week for a few hours was a great play date for him. Everyone has opinions please discuss nicely. Thanks.

I was J/K about my 1st post obviously. My boy is 7 and just started 2nd grade. While in preschool my kid learned sign language. But the number 1 thing he learned was how to interact with other kids. He entered preschool extremely shy and reserved. Today he's much more outgoing and makes friends easily!

Wife made fun of me when I did this until the son's teacher remarked to her about his reading ability improving greatly over the previous few weeks.

I just read a few of your older posts not much interesting except for the one you asked about building your first cycle. In that post you sounded like you did your homework and even had a brain. So I am not sure why you had to jump in here on a post that was about a special day that most parent enjoy with their family (first day of school in case you forgot) and toss in your opinion in a way that slams everyone else. I think its great that you feel like you are doing something good for your kids. And having a few more sheltered, deprived kids with no social skills only makes it easier for our children to succeed - hay someone has to clean the toilets at the zoo.

I have 6 kids, as I earlier wrote. I am a teacher. I have also worked with over 200 kids with learning disabilities in a private practice. So, this is a "hot button" topic for me. I see way too many suburban folks so carried away with their jobs and their lives, and the kids are the ones to suffer. Kids need parents, not entertainment and TV and institutions. And it is *HARD* to get that message out to suburbia, where having the latest car and the biggest house and nicest boat and most expensive cruise is what so many people live for.
How about just paying attention to your own kid?
I honestly did not mean to address my comments to a *particular* board member - I was pissing in the wind, ranting about a societal problem in general.
So, while I believe in every word I wrote, I am sorry if indivdiuals were hurt,
On the other hand, if someone needed to read those words to change their parenting approach...well, the hell I receive back is worth it

I know you're not serious here, just doing a little rhetorical battle....but just to correct the misperceptions, homeschooled students actually score higher on every standardized test in every state in the US than public schoooled kids. That shouldn't surprise anyone: every educator knows that one on one teaching is the most effective.
My own kids play piano, community soccor and basketball, violin, ride horses in equestrian events, sing in a chorus, dance in a troupe, have had parts in community plays, volunteer at a community kitchen, etc. Hardle sheltered.
Homeschooled students are accepted into the military at higher positions than high school grads. As a rule, they are socialized *better* than many public schooled students. That is because they interact with people of all ages (just like real life), instead of begin separated by age as in a school setting. Those students do NOT become "socialized" - they become "Peer Dependent," and they subjugate their own opinion and behavior to that of the group.
