On May 5, 2022, the World’s Strongest Man organization announced that Peiman Maheripourehir had to bow out of the competition, scheduled for May 24-29, 2022, in Sacramento, California. Shortly after, Manuel Angulo was named as his replacement, and so the roster still stands 30 strong.
According to a post made by Maheripourehir, he is withdrawing due to visa issues. This marks the third dropout since WSM finalized the roster on March 27, 2022.

The Iranian strongman and powerlifter qualified for the WSM in 2017 and 2018 but never competed in the finals. There were high hopes for him in 2022 thanks to his strength in the deadlift — including a 492-kilogram pull, completed in March of 2021. This would’ve been his third attempt to compete in strongman’s most notable show and his first WSM appearance in four years.
Maheripourehir joins Rauno Heinla and Mateusz Kieliszkowski on a list of athletes who have dropped out of the contest. Other competitors that have declined to compete in WSM from the jump include Graham Hicks, Cheick “Iron Biby” Sanou, Žydr?nas Savickas, and J.F. Caron.
On the same day, the WSM also announced his replacement and the new 30th entrant. That man is Manuel Angulo Jaime (also known as Manuel Angulo) of Chile. If he competes in Sacramento, the 45-year-old will be making his World’s Strongest Man debut.
Angulo doesn’t have a solid international following, so his name may not be familiar to casual strongman fans. His most recent international contest appearance was in the Master’s Men Over 40 category at the 2021 Official Strongman Games in Daytona, FL. He failed to make the top 10 and advance to the finals. Savickas won that contest.
However, his entry could provide a Cinderella-type storyline to the big contest in California. He may be a new name on the WSM scene. Still, he hopes to surprise a field that includes four previous champions — defending champion Tom Stoltman, 2020 winner Oleksii Novikov, 2019 World’s Strongest Man Martins Licis, and four-time champion Brian Shaw.
