National Strongman Competitor
Figured I'd give you guys a glimpse into some of the training techniques we use in Strongman...
In my class (anything 231lbs and below) you are considered a lightweight regardless of height.
Only 10 years ago the heavyweights in Worlds Strongest Man, guys 300-400lbs had to use 250lbs per hand in an event called the farmers walk...Now a lightweight like myself has to use 300+ pounds at literally almost half the bodyweight....Strength athletes are forced to do more then ever and it continues to increase.
The farmers walk is a lift where you first deadlift two cylinders off the floor and then run with the weight, across a predetermined length, typically 50 or 100 feet. Fastest time wins.
Now as a lightweight, an "average" Farmers Walk is with 300-320 pounds per hand. And the bar is 2" in width. And you cannot use straps, only chalk and a belt. It is not easy, because A) Your first deadlift the weight, then B) Run with it...
So I have discovered that ONE ARMED DEADLIFT training, with Straps helps my CNS adjust. In this video, I am 195lbs, doing 405. My diet is off, because its just too hard and expensive to sit at 215 Naturally, food is just too much....
Precontest i will range 215 to 225, usually on the lighter end. When I win a contest, it is that much better since I am the smallest guy always, but in most cases the strongest. I also still carry a bodybuilder's build since I was a bodybuilder for so many years, my body wants to keep what it's used to... goes to show you size doesn't always matter for strength..
Anyways, just wanted to give you guys some insight into a different sport. This wouldn't do much for a bodybuilder at all, but for strength, its a technique that helps me win...
