This mini-review by Washmuth & colleagues (2024) synthesized the evidence looking at swearing and wheather or not it can enhance physical performance during short, intense tasks.
Interestingly, studies consistently report improvements, such as a 9% increase in grip strength and 22% longer wall sit endurance, when participants use swear words compared to neutral ones. This suggests swearing could act as a simple and accessible performance booster.

But how does this work?

The mechanisms likely involve physiological arousal, psychological motivation, and reduced pain sensitivity...

However, its practical application is limited by the taboo surrounding swearing and potential habituation with frequent use. Future research should focus on “optimizing swearing protocols” (🤣🤣🤣), perhaps exploring its effects across various physical activities, and addressing real-world applicability to maximize its potential benefits!
