The best times to take extra protein

Protein is one of the most important nutrients for trainers, especially those who are training hard.

By properly targeting your protein intake, you can greatly improve the results you will get from your training.

The best times to take extra protein are:

First thing in the morning (immediately upon waking): This breaks the fast with an instant shot of amino acids. Your body is in a catabolic (muscle wasting) state upon waking. You can reverse this with a protein drink.

Immediately after a workout: At this time your body is starting to rebuild and recover from the workout. Giving it protein will prevent it from breaking down your own muscle to rebuild with.

About an hour after a workout: Your body has calmed down from the workout and is ready to rebuild seriously. Give it the building blocks to work with.

Right before going to sleep: Sleep is the time when your body rejuvenates itself. Some protein before sleep will give it something to work with.

In the middle of the night (if you wake up during the night): Have a premixed protein drink sitting right beside your bed, ready to drink. This will break the fast in half and give your body something to build with instead of muscle tissue. This is especially useful if you sleep for a long time.

You can also take protein with meals if you didn't get enough from the food or in between meals just to keep your body supplied.

On a personal note, I've been trying the miidle of the night intake, wife aint to happy about it though :D

The hardest thing for me about the middle of the night protein was going all the way downstairs, which woke me up more than I would have liked. When I kept the powder and the water filled shaker by the bathroom sink, it barely woke up at all to drink it, and could get right back to sleep!

I've read article saying getting up in the middle of the night for a protein shake does wonders for you.

But when I go to sleep, I'm out like a light, so no first hand experience.

I'm 41 is that old?? I don't feel old...I still Lift, Grapple & flirt with the young Ladies. LOL

personally, i eat complex carbs, especially oatmeal within 15 minutes after a workout and protein within 40 minutes. i think the carbs hold off the lactic acid, then introduce protein. am i wrong?

I could have sworn I read that protein holds off the lactic acid. What about these PM protein powders? I know they are expensive as all hell, but do they work?

middle of the night protein sucks for having to wake up... but it makes all the difference in bulking for me.

i would actualy wake up automaticly everynight for a shake, seems like the body knows when your eating every 2.5 hours, this ofcourse was only for my precontest a month or 2 out, but it was bizaar to me, the body is amazing
