My calf is significantly better today but still a long way from "good." What I read on a couple of medical and physical therapy websites is that days 1-3 should be "rest, ice, elevation." I'm doing that now. Days 4-7 introduce light stretching and some exercise. Interestingly, I read that inflammation is the body's mechanism for removing damaged cells, so ibuprofen or the like should not be taken the first 3-5 days. I took 3 ibuprofen and 1 Tylenol soon after I got home and before I read that, but haven't taken anything since. It isn't swollen, and so far isn't turning black & blue, and doesn't hurt unless I inadvertently put weight on my toes or the ball of my foot. It feels very tight, and gentle stretching makes it feel like I did a super intense, heavy calf workout. That kind of 2 day after muscle soreness. I'm hopeful that rapid improvement continues.

I'm supposed to play Wednesday night and have my coaching/training session Thursday. I haven't called any of that off yet but may have to.

As for conditioning, my neighbor has a large crossfit gym, including a couple of rowing machines and "Assault" bikes. I'm planning to go over there this afternoon and use the rowing machine to keep progressing with the cardio. I may try the Assault bike, but I doubt that will be viable, given that the pedals contact the ball of the foot and this require calf engagement. It will be an interesting experiment, however.

I should be able to do at least a partial back workout, though barbell rows are probably out. I may even have a tough time carrying dumbells, so may be limited to my lat pull down machine. We'll see about all of that.

Right now, I'm going to snooze a little bit; then my wife and I have an errand to do, so any gym time is a couple of hours away.

I went to the neighbor's gym and did a total of 22 minutes on the rowing machine, intervals of "sprinting" and "coasting." I started off with a 1-1/2 minute sprint and then rested for 2-1/2. Then I switched it to 1 minute sprint/ 2 minute coast. I finally gave it up when my butt got sore! LOL! Between leg day yesterday and the hard seat on the rower, I was feeling it. After a short break, I decided to try the Assault bike. I had my doubts about this because of calf engagement on the pedals, but it was fine. I did a 3:40 programmed interval on that, 10 seconds "work" and 20 seconds "rest" as the Assault bike screen calls it. I did a cool down slow ride for a few, until my heart rate was back down near normal and now I'm out in my gym doing lat pull downs.

180 warmup 1x10 (not that I needed a warmup after the rowing machine)

230: 1x8
230: 1x5

Here's a couple pictures of left and right. Nothing much to see. I can't feel any lumps or depressions when feeling around (palpating, I think is the medical term). View attachment 37614View attachment 37615

it looks pretty good bro are you walking fine?

No, not walking fine at all. Can't put body weight on the ball of my foot or push off in a normal stride. So I'm walking with this half flat footed limp and it's slow.

It does seem to be getting better fairly quickly but is nowhere near good. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

@EMW14 Good work bro....keep it up.....

No training today, but I'm happy to report that my calf is steadily and rapidly improving. I'm not yet walking normally, but I might be tomorrow. I was up and down ladders all afternoon today with no problem. Walking up even a slight incline is still difficult, but I'm very happy with progress.

rest up bro

I tried to play hockey last night. I fully expected my calf to be just fine, but after a couple of warmup laps I took a couple of hard strides and it was very clear that I'm not ready to skate yet. I really hope another week is all I need. I'm not interested in a major setback. I'm obviously skipping hockey coaching/training today also. I'll be heading over to the neighbor's gym later to do some cardio on the Assault bike.

Tomorrow will be a week since the injury and it's just now starting to turn black and blue. That's consistent with what I read for a deep calf injury.

I'm currently in my gym for a quick chest workout. Don't have much time, so going to get a few sets of bench and incline in and call it done.

Meanwhile, my low back has been sore for a couple of weeks. Not terrible; I just feel like I've done heavy squats or deadlines when I haven't (except for my last leg workout). I don't know why I can't get rid of this feeling. I'm going to get back to doing my PT exercises more diligently and hopefully that will help.

Chest workout:

The usual empty bar warmup (35 rapid reps)

PVC PIPE stretches - these are awesome for shoulder mobility!

135 warmup: 1 x 10
185 warmup: 1x10
225: 1x5
245: 1x4
255: 1x3 was hoping for 4 reps here but didn't have it.
225: 1x5

Incline db press:
55 lbs: 2x5
55 lbs: 1x7

Between sets I did my low back PT exercises: marching bridges - I find these extremely difficult. Lie flat on back with feet flat on the mat, knees up. Feet fairly close to gluten. Raise hips high in a bridge, then lift one leg 2" off the mat and hold for 5 seconds WITHOUT HIPS MOVING. Do not let hips drop or shift to the side. Then the other leg. I can do two reps each leg and then need a break.

Some stretching and done. Low back feels a little bit better. I dunno why I have to learn over and over that exercise = feel better...

@EMW14 great job on the warm up. It's very good exercises as well. I'm glad you're doing shoulder mobility.

Before this I use a broomstick. ALL top benchers at least start with the bar

Beautiful job on this. I like the marching bridges. @EMW14 and I like how you explain how you're doing them.

@EMW14 seems like you're doing some good exercises. Work in your core and also make sure you're warming up. That is smart.

Bros, that's what you gotta do with a workout: you gotta put in the time for the warm-ups. That's something I used to not do back in the day. @EMW14

@EMW14 legit updates....keep growing.....

Sunday afternoon update: I spent yesterday afternoon laying block for my house project. First course, so several hours either crouched way down; on my knees; or bent double at the waist. My low back was VERY sore! I haven't taken a bath in probably 50 years, whenever I was "big enough" to take a shower. Well, I installed a whirlpool tub in our bathroom and decided to try an Epsom salt bath. I cannot believe how much of the low back soreness that relieved! I read that it is also a good natural preventive measure against Restless Legs Syndrome. It seemed to help with that, too. BTW, I'm off the meds my doc prescribed for that unless I feel like I really need them. I've taken Ropinirole once after hockey since that's typically a particularly bad time for that issue.

My calf is improving daily. It's still sore, and is turning my whole lower leg purple. Oddly, it's a bit swollen now, more than a full week after it happened (zero swelling initially). I tried to run on the treadmill this afternoon and could do very brief spurts of light jogging, but no real running. I'm doing some stretching exercises and calf raises regularly (multiple times a day) as I try to get that problem solved. Progress. I really hope I can skate Wednesday night and Thursday for my game and coaching session. We shall see.

Shoulder and arm workout this afternoon:

Started with some PVC PIPE stretching for shoulder mobility followed by 5lb dumbell lateral raises, 1x20, holding for 5 seconds in the raised position on each rep.

Then front raises, also with 5lb db's. On these, I raised to shoulder height, stopped and held for a few seconds; then raised up overhead; back down to shoulder height and stop for a few seconds, and back down to starting position. One set of 10.

Light Arnie presses:
5lb: 1x10
10lb: 1x10
15lb: 1x7. These are very challenging. Despite the super light weight, I am getting stronger. It takes a LONG TIME!

Lateral raises:
10lb: 1x20
15lb: 1x20
20lb: 1x10

DB military press:
30lb: 1x10
35: 1x9
40: 1x10

Because of my injured left rotater cuff (supraspinatus) these are challenging. I have to keep my elbow directly out to the side or I don't have the strength to stabilize it. That's why set 2 was only 9 reps. My elbow drifted in at the bottom of the rep and the db just fell. I didn't lose my grip on it - I'm exaggerating somewhat - but you get the idea.

Biceps:

EZ Bar curls:
65 lbs (including the bar)
2x10

Triceps:
Close grip bench press:
135lbs: 1x10
155: 1x10
165: 1x10
175: 1x6
If you recall, I couldn't do these very well at all when I started this log because of the pain lingering from my hand surgery. That wasn't an issue today, thank goodness. I guess my hand is pretty much fully healed.

Tricep bar overhead press:
55lbs (including 25lb bar):
2x10
65lbs: 1x6

Tricep pushdowns:
65 lbs: 2x10
75: 1x8

External rotations (rotater cuff exercise):
40lb band: 2x10

Calf raises: standing body weight, putting more weight on my left (injured) calf:
2x10 with a deep stretch on each rep

Seated calf raises: I only have a primitive, home made calf block. I put a 45lb plate on my left knee and did 1x10; then put 2 plates on my knee and did 1x10. This hurt my knee, but not my calf. LOL!

Pix of the circle on my knee from the plates; and my primitive calf block:
