Several strongmen who competed at the 2022 Rogue Strongman Invitational at the Dell Diamond stadium in Round Rock, TX, on Oct. 28-30, 2022, have ventured to their YouTube channels to recap their experiences.
2021 Rogue Strongman Invitational champion Martins Licis felt that there needed to be more time to prepare for the events as he entered the contest at his heaviest bodyweight ever — 360 pounds. Rob Kearney suffered a familial loss in the week leading to the contest that upended his training, though he was still satisfied with several of the event results he posted. Licis and Kearney finished fourth and eighth, respectively.
Oleksii Novikov stood atop the podium as the event’s champion. Next to him in the runner-up position was 2022 Shaw Classic champion Trey Mitchell, who took to his YouTube channel on Nov. 3, 2022, to recap his experience at the competition in his home state of Texas. Check it out below:

Cyr Dumbbell Ladder
Mitchell performed well in his favorite event: the Cyr Dumbbell Ladder. He was one of only two athletes to lift all five Cyr Dumbbells. The other was Novikov, who notoriously excels in heavy dumbbell press events, particularly with Mateusz Kieliszkowski absent from elite competition while recovering from injury. Mitchell earned second-place points in this event for hoisting four dumbbells in a time of 49.39 seconds, surprising himself with a new PR.
Novikov got the win for lifting the fourth dumbbell a second time, earning five total reps. For reference, the dumbbells ascended in weight in this order: 114.7, 124.2, 126.9, and 129.2 kilograms (253, 274, 280, and 285 pounds).
Yoke to Log Press Medley
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Mitchell’s least favorite event was the Yoke to Log Press Medley, though his results suggest it to be a reasonable event for his skill set. While not the fastest strongman in the field, Mitchell is a beacon of consistency with heavy implements. That was represented by his slow and steady fifth-place finish of 1:08.25 after locking out all three reps of the log press.
Tower of Power
The Tower of Power event, effectively a suspension deadlift event where the weight was suspended underneath the athletes as they deadlifted, was likely a bright place to put winning bets on Mitchell. He is consistently in the mix at the top of the standings in heavy deadlift events, and this wasn’t any different.
Mitchell scored 10 reps, exceeding his expectations by three to four reps. While that wasn’t enough to blunt Pavlo Nakonechnyy’s 12 reps for first place, Mitchell was the only other athlete to lock out double-digit reps — enough for second place.

Husafell Sandbag Carry
It was unlikely a surprise that Mitchell Hooper claimed the win in the Husafell Sandbag Carry event. It tested each strongman’s work capacity — something Hooper, who ran marathons before competing in strongman — has shown his prowess with since the 2022 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) competition.
Mitchell’s fourth-place distance of 158 feet, two inches was satisfying for him as it was not an event he put too much effort into training. As the event was time-capped, athletes could rest if needed as long as they did not drop the sandbag. Mitchell used that to his advantage by squatting to a rest position with the sandbag in his lap to catch his breath and allow his heart rate to lower.
Rogue-a-Coaster
The Rogue-a-Coaster event — a 600-pound arm-over-arm pull — was lighter than Mitchell trained for. He had a steady run that locked in fourth-place points for him. It was Licis’ strategy in the event to execute tighter transition times to win paid off. Although Mitchell felt he could have potentially had a faster run, he was content with the pacing he maintained for the duration of his heat.
Stones Over Hitching Post
Mitchell believes the Stones events are his “bread and butter,” and the results are there to back him up. He won the event, converting all five stones in a time of 24.79 seconds. While two-time reigning WSM champion Tom Stoltman usually lives up to his moniker of “King of the Stones,” he wasn’t present at this contest.
That opened the door for Mitchell to display his impressive talents for moving stones from the ground to the other side of a high beam. While Novikov took third in the event to deny Mitchell enough points to take the overall title, Mitchell’s run was still one of the standout performances across the weekend.
Mitchell’s next contest is the 2022 World’s Strongest Nation (WSN) contest, where he will compete as a member of Team USA on Nov. 26, 2022, in Liverpool, UK.
