what type of shrugs do you prefer?

Barbell, dumbell, cables? I do all but like cables cause I can get different angles on it.
 
Dumbbell. Barbell is great but ive been doing behind the back shrugs and really feel a difference. Never done cable shrugs.
 
I try to do different ones each time. DB, BB behind back, shrugs on universal bench (where I can stack on
the weight) and I like cable for the different angle but cant go real heavy.(because
the weights can only go so high on the 5 station) Sometimes I do DB, but drop
sets down the rack untill I get to the 10 or 15's and they hurt. lol I like at least reps of 20. What are
your guys rep range?

I do both but not real often, I like upright rows for traps, but shrugs are good, guess I prefer dumbells for the creativity and flexibilty
 
Barbells in the front for me.....one arm on cables seem to work pretty good for too. For some reason I have never really like dumbell shrugs....has always felt weird to me.
 
I use 45lb plates with handles, and sometimes a camber bar with 135lbs..

I go super light, 90-135lbs for high reps, slow and controlled and lean slightly forward on all reps...squeeze as hard as I can and pull my traps as high as I can, and hold for 5 seconds, breathe out..lower the weight while stretching..

I do them 2-3x per week..

For me I have found they are like calves, the more often I hit them and lower weight and more controlled, the more size I gain..I put on well over 2" doing them light like this.
 
I used to love heavy barbell shrugs, but I can't do them with my back. I stick to Hammer strength, but very rarely. Fortunately my traps are pretty big and really don't require direct training
 
i like the soreness from barbell shrug, but they always hurt my nuts doing them

when you do barbell shrugs in the front, you dont rest your balls on the bar. DUHHHH!! LOL
And Wess, not to sure if your traps have grown. Those things between your sholders and neck are in the way. lol
I think you always had big traps. (im going to try it your way though)

The bar stays close to my body and unfortunately every rep grazes them...

And if you've never tried them, I do shrugs on the low pulley cable row machine. You simply sit like you'd get ready to do a cable row instead you simply pull your shoulder blades together. Those actually developed my traps into something they'd never been

i'm gonna have to try those as windowmaker...i don't have the "black guy traps" where look pulled back and defined in lower trap

Wes, whats high reps for you. For years I did very heavy shrugs low reps. My traps didnt really grow until I started
reps of 20. Tried your 5 second contraction today with 5 second strech at bottom. Sets of 20. Tell ya tomorow
how they feel. lol Gonna try the cable row contraction also. Good post.
