Marketing will make or break your Bussiness. You need to exploite your strengths versus your opponnents weaknesses. As I see it your strengths are really going to be Knowledge. You know what you are talking about and people will believe you because of the way you look.

You can seperate yourself from GNC Just by offering some different items they don't carry. IE higher quality protien and such. People will come in to buy EAS or Whatever they saw in Muscle and Fitness. You need to sell them on something only you carry so they have to come back to you to get it.
Schwartz labs, Scitech, and Cytosport are a good product but not as nationaly known.(at least in my area)

Getting pros, national competitors, and/or actors or other celebrities in would be a great way to market. Offer discounts to members of certain gyms in the area.... Carry foods for people with special dietary restrictions (allergen free vitamins/supplements/whatever) and then contact local or national groups that those people would belong to.

Bro the best place to buy any Refrigerator restaraunt type stuff (blenders, mixers) is right on Bowery off of Canal street in NYC. They have every type of thing used and new equipment you could imagine. It is like a mecca for this type stuff, like 1,000 vendors. They do cash deals cheap. I know where you can get trucking to your new shop, no charge .

You can buy a mailing list to bulk mail to people who subscribe to certain mags. IE contact M&F tell them you want subscribers in such and such zip codes. They will usually charge around 10cents per name. With a bulk mail account at the post office you can mail for around 23cents per name. I believe bulk mail accounts cost $150 to start up. MSN small business has a function that will turn the list that M&F emails you into a format you can print on your puter. It is called Microsoft direct mail manager. Easy to use. About the lines of supps. You need to do both. Carry the major brands. EAS and Muscle Tech Etc. But also carry higher quality better brands that only you have. Doesn't really matter if they are the Creme de la Creme or not-However you will tell your customers they are. Put them middle shelf Eye Level. I personally would figure out what you make the most money with and make that your best protien. People buy what you sell them. Once they find something they like and can only get it from you, you are set. Scout other supp stores in the area.
Find what they don't have and Exploit it.

Another way to make cheap adv is to make up your own newspaper ads. Once you win the show in your own back yard. Write a story for the paper, get a pic they can use. Sneak your supp store name in it. If they print it best advertising you can get. If not you are not out anything. Many times they will print it. Especially smaller papers.
