PNBA Natural Bodybuilder Ben Howard Says Over-Dieting in Bodybuilding Is Unhealthy
Image via Instagram @ben_howard_ukdfba_pro
PNBA natural bodybuilder Ben Howard describes the severe health consequences he suffered after over-dieting for a bodybuilding show.
Strict diets are standard in bodybuilding, especially as bodybuilding shows approach. Unfortunately, rigorous nutrition can place your body under a lot of stress and cause many problems. Professional Natural Bodybuilding Association (PNBA) and World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF) natural bodybuilder Ben Howard was on the Longevity Muscle Podcast and discussed how over-dieting for a competition could lead to severe health issues.
Over-Dieting Health Consequences
Howard said in WNBF shows that he would cut weight to make the lightweight division. However, he admitted that it was his choice to be the heaviest lightweight in the class rather than competing as a healthier, lighter, middleweight contender. Although he had great success in competitions (Pro Lightweight World Champion), his health suffered. Howard stated:
“You get to a point to where you’re dieting for a show that your body starts to fight back a little bit. Sleep starts to suffer. Your hormones definitely take a dip. Your strength starts to diminish. You start to lose muscle mass.
You are obsessed with food. Food focus is really high. Fatigue is through the roof. Then if you’re 5 pounds over the stage weight, you got to keep going.”
Howard described what happened the 6-12 months after over-dieting for a show, despite winning and being a world champion. He gained 40-50 lbs in six weeks, couldn’t control his eating habits, and couldn’t get his sleep back on track. Moreover, he became overweight and had to take three years off from competing to reset his body.
Howard praises not having to cut weight for PNBA shows for making the sport of natural bodybuilding healthier since just an extra five pounds can make a world of difference.
3 Days a Week Training Frequency
During the Longevity Muscle Podcast, Howard touched on several other subjects, including why he only trains three days a week—according to Howard, lifting three days a week works best for his body. So after a day of heavy squatting, deadlifting, or pressing, he takes a day off. Any more, and he feels like he loses the quality of the movement.
Howard also attributes his three-day training regimen to not having to take time off or implement deload weeks. However, guys doing more volume during the week (4-6 days of training) will have to for recovery.
Importance of Deadlifts and Volume
In addition, Ben Howard talked about how deadlifts are your posterior chain’s bread and butter movement. Howard claimed that even targeting his arms between deadlift and squat days will affect his recovery progress, though. He believes it still places too much stress on your body and joints.
Ben Howard says he focuses on lower volume with deadlifts and squats instead of a lot of training volume. And he doesn’t believe his back would look the way it does if it weren’t for years of deadlifting.
Natural Olympia Goal
In the podcast, Howard clarified his end goal in natural bodybuilding. Howard affirmed:
“My goal is clear, it’s absolutely clear. I want to be competing on that Natural Olympia, the pinnacle of natural bodybuilding and my goal is now to win the Natural Olympia.”

Jay Cutler Speaks On Cedric McMillan’s Legacy: ‘One Of The Best Physiques We Have Seen In Quite Some Time’
Jay Cutler reflects on Cedric McMillan’s time in bodybuilding and how special his physique was.
It has been a couple weeks now since the bodybuilding world lost another legend in Cedric McMillan. This is another death that has hit the sport hard and many have been remembering McMillan in different ways. Jay Cutler spoke on his podcast about the legacy that McMillan built on stage and how he will be remembered.
On a recent episode of Cutler Cast, the bodybuilding legend spoke on his time spent with McMillan during his prime.
“He was a big figurehead in our industry and he was someone people looked upon. And He was one of the big aesthetic guys and probably one of the best physiques we have seen in quite some time. It’s just always very hard to peak perfect. I remember when I saw him in the Nationals, I just said like this guy could be like the next Ronnie Coleman.”
Jay Cutler made comparisons for Cedric McMillan to Ronnie Coleman early in his career. This is a competitor that Cutler knows very well given their own history. In 2006, Cutler won his first Olympia title, ending Coleman’s eight-year reign as champion on the biggest stage.
Cutler continued to speak on the sport of bodybuilding and the recent string of deaths. Shawn Rhoden and George Peterson passed away at the end of 2021 and these were other instances where the sport was shaken up.
There are many competitors who have won the Olympia and found themselves at the top of bodybuilding at age 30 and 40. Cutler believes that bodybuilding is a young man’s game.
“I’m just gonna state what my thought on all this is, okay. I’ve said it before. You know bodybuilding used to be a young man’s game… Chris Dickerson won Mr. Olympia at around 40. Obviously, we saw Shawn Rhoden win (Mr. Olympia) at 43. There’s not to say you can’t do it. But is it suggestive to be a competitive bodybuilder on that level into your 40s? I think not.”
Jay Cutler put together one of the best bodybuilding careers of all-time. He has maintained an elite physique in retirement but does not believe competitors should maintain this championship physique preparing for competition.
“Not to say that it’s bad to get ready for a bodybuilding competition but the professional top tier, Mr. Olympia level, I’m not so sure about it.
Two or three Olympias I’m like, ‘why do I do this?’ It shouldn’t be like that. You’re the best in the world at what you do. I was trying to defend the title and I was dehydrated to the point where my mind just wasn’t there. It was always the dehydration process that was the hardest for me.”
Jay Cutler has been open about PED use in retirement and believes that athletes should get blood work done regularly. This is a way to make sure that bodybuilders are healthy and if not, they know what needs to be improved.

3 Proven Ways To Boost Muscle Growth For Real Results
Take the guessing game out of your routine.
“If you love life, don’t waste time, for time is what life is made up of.”
The above quote is from the late, great, Bruce Lee. The Jeet Kune Do creator, movie star, and world philosopher was a busy man and regarded his time as one of his greatest commodities. And we should do the same. While we might not all be movie stars or that of celebrity status, we have busy lives. Between work, personal time, relationships, and working out, sometimes we feel spread thin. But our muscle growth shouldn’t suffer just because we are busy.
Many of us are going to the gym and slugging it out in an all-out war against the weights. While guts get the glory and going H.A.M. is definitely a real thing, the old adage of working smarter and not harder definitely applies. Like anything, you want to take a cerebral, as well as action-oriented solution, to your building goals and that starts with research and experimentation. On top of this, seeking advice from professional athletes and those bodybuilders we know and love can go a long way.
Muscle growth seems to be a mysterious topic for a lot of fitness enthusiast. Whether it’s the beginner who doesn’t know where to start or the builder who’s reached a plateau, nailing down a clear and concise plan for muscle growth seems to be elusive…until now.
We have narrowed down three proven ways to boost muscle growth. While there are of course plenty of ways to do so, we wanted to share these 3 tips because we feel they can be very beneficial to you. By putting these into your routine, you set yourself up for better success come your workout.
3 Proven Ways To Boost Muscle Growth
Let’s take a look at 3 proven ways to boost muscle growth so you can get the most out of your muscle building and physique sculpting goals. Stop wasting your time by doing the same stuff and work to build muscle effectively and efficiently so you see the best gains possible.
1. Time Under Tension
Time under tension (TUT) is like the pi symbol in mathematics. It’s the building block for muscle growth, and what you need to focus on if you want to get bigger. Tension promotes amino acid transport into the muscles, activates the mTOR pathway of protein synthesis, and triggers small injuries in the muscle cell structure that leads to repair and additional growth (1).
This added resistance can come in the form of many different exercises, but here is where cable machines can be beneficial. That added level of support while working out, plus the tension of the cable offers resistance great for building gains. Of course, resistance bands are designed for this purpose well.

2. Eccentric Contractions
There are two ways your muscles exert force, concentrically (shortening) and eccentrically (lengthening). Eccentric contractions work when your muscle works against an opposing force and then needs to back track and reverse that movement. The benefit to eccentric contractions are that you will get stronger and increase muscle mass given the added tension and need for the movement to take place (2). Plus, more structurally, you will build stronger connective tissue for additional support.
A great way to apply this to your regular workout would be to load a weight slightly higher than what you normally do for a specific exercise, and have a partner help you with the positive (concentric) portion of the exercise, then do the negative (eccentric) portion without assistance. Not only do you get the benefit of performing this eccentric movement, but you also will have the support of a partner to aid in all your goals.

3. Don’t Blow Your Back Out
Your spine is the epicenter combining brain and brawn, literally. With that being said, protecting it should be one of your highest priorities. If you can’t move, you can’t build muscle, so protecting your back is key. One of the best ways of protecting your back while building muscle in the very same area are front squats.
Front squats are great for activation of the vastus medialius (quadriceps) and the biomechanics are better for your body in general than a back squat of the same weight. Front squats can also reinforce form so you take technique more seriously for added safety.
Can Supplements Help Boost Muscle?
Supplements have proven to be great aids to building muscle, so long as they are from reputable brands and contain premium ingredients. Some staple supplements used to increase muscle include things like protein powders to pump you with protein for growth and better recovery (3), pre-workouts to increase energy and get the blood flowing for muscle pumps (4), and BCAAs as intra-workout fuel to stimulate growth and burst through fatigue (5).
However, if you are more advanced and are seeking more out of your supplementation routine, give mass gainers and casein protein a try. Able to pump you with protein, as well as other ingredients, you will find these two supplements are game changers for those serious about building muscle.
When it comes to supplements, finding only the highest quality products will give you comfort in knowing what you are putting in your body is working for you and your gains.
Wrap Up
Building muscle is hard but these 3 ways to boost muscle growth are great as you look to get the most out of each and every workout. While there are many other tips that can help you build muscle like nutrition and adequate rest, we felt these were some of the most overlooked. Incorporate these building blocks into your routine and let us know if it helps you get the most out of your workout. You will find is that muscle growth depends on a number of factors, but at the end of the day, by following the most effective steps, you can get there no problem. With these three tips, as well as with proper supplementation, you can build muscle, tone your physique, and see those results you want most.

PNBA Natural Bodybuilder Derek Joe Compares In-Season Vs Off-Season Physique
Image via Instagram @djoe.hype
PNBA Natural Olympia Classic Physique champ Derek Joe compares his onstage body with his off-season physique.
Bodybuilders don’t walk around with the same physique year-round. Most of the year, the shredded body they have when posing on stage during a show is much different from their off-season physique. Professional Natural Bodybuilder Associaton (PNBA) Natural Olympia Classic Physique champ Derek Joe shared a post on social media to compare his physique before a competition and when he’s bulking.
Derek Joe is a multi-media contracted athlete who won the Classic Physique category at 2021 Natural Olympia. On April 16, 2022, Derek Joe shared photos of himself on Instagram, comparing his physique a couple of days before his first competition in 2021 to when he was at his heaviest weight this year after bulking. Derek Joe stated:
“The picture on the left is of me last year two days before the first show of the season at 162-164 lbs.
The picture on the right is while I was near the top of my bulk this year, around 204 lbs. I’ve been fluctuating between 199-202 lbs for the last six weeks.”
Joe is undergoing a 20-week prep for the INBA PNBA Natural Universe show in Tampa, Florida, September 2-3, 2022. Joe says that his ideal stage weight will be around 170-175 pounds, but he mentions that it will ultimately depend on how he looks as the competition approaches.
Below you can see Derek Joe’s complete statement and physique comparison.

Bodybuilder’s Body Fat In-Season Vs. Off-Season Physique
Of course, bodybuilders have extremely low body fat levels as they compete onstage. It’s not sustainable to maintain these body fat percentages year-round, though. Bodybuilders must go through a bulking phase to build muscle during the off-season. Also, it’s not healthy to have too low body fat levels. 3x Natural Olympia Classic Physique champ Brandon Lirio says, “you need to be able to say goodbye to the abs and let your hormones rebalance and gain.”
According to ACE, essential body fat for men and women is 2-5% (men) and 10-13% (women). When bodybuilders are in-season, they have rigorous diet and training protocols to keep them hovering around these essential levels. That’s why their weight will fluctuate drastically throughout the year. For example, Derek Joe is 40 pounds lighter in the photo on the left compared to the image on the right above. And as you can see, his body fat percentage is drastically higher during the off-season.
Nutrition
Of course, bodybuilders’ diets play a crucial role in the low body fat levels they can get down to. Competitive bodybuilders maintain a pretty rigorous diet all year, but they’re more flexible during the offseason than during the season. On the other hand, their nutrition is extremely strict during the season, as you’d imagine.
For example, carb cycling is a popular dieting method some bodybuilders will utilize to shred fat. Carb cycling consists of low-carb days, which forces your body to burn fat as fuel.
Recap
Bodybuilders’ physique varies throughout the year depending on if they’re in-season or off-season. Competitors will have extremely low body fat percentages before a show. However, they’ll bulk during the off-season to build more muscle and balance their hormones.

Muscleman Kills Father-Of-Two With Punch Following Nightclub Incident, Sentenced To 11 Years In Prison
Robert Owen Greenhalgh has been sentenced for an incident where he killed a man at a nightclub.
In September, Robert Owen Greenhalgh killed Robert Smethurst, 36, following an incident at a nightclub. Smethurst suffered brain trauma and succumbed to injuries later that night. Recently, Greenhalgh pleaded guilty to manslaughter and has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.
On the night of the incident, it was reported that Smethurst, a father-of-two, stepped on Greenhalgh’s foot. Later in the night, Greenhalgh attacked Smethurst, who was celebrating his birthday at Luxe Lounge in Bradshawgate, Bolton. The incident occurred around 1:30 A.M.
Greenhalgh was sentenced by Judge Anthony Cross QC. He made a comment during the portion of the sentencing while Smethurst’s wife, Amanda, also spoke.
“Not for one moment did you consider that which you had done, other than to glory in your achievement and invite others to attack you,” Cross said.
“I was robbed of my husband, my best friend, my happiness and my future all in one,” amanda smethurst said. “How could someone be so violent and hateful towards my husband who did absolutely nothing to deserve this attack?
The love for my husband is overwhelming proof of what an incredible man he is. I miss him more than words could ever describe.”
Robert Owen Greenhalgh has no previous convictions but police learned of his violent history after he claimed he “knocked out” three people on one occasion. He was also open about his steroid and cocaine use. Prior to attending the club, Greenhalgh had been drinking and doing drugs with a friend.
Greenhalgh was found at a hotel in Leigh following the incident. Police found syringes with traces of testosterone and trenbolone used for the gym in his work van. Greenhalgh referenced the drugs he was using when discussing the event.
In the end, Robert Owen Greenhalgh will spend 11 years and three months in prison. He will serve two-thirds of the term in prison. After being released, Greenhalgh will have to observe an added three years and nine months on license.

Jim Stoppani On Modern Bodybuilding: “The Sport Is Not Causing Drug Use, The People Are”
[embedded content]
Jim Stoppani reacts to modern bodybuilding, drug use, and respect in the sport today.
Jim Stoppani is an Exercise Physiologist and a passionate fan of bodybuilding. While he never became a career competitive bodybuilder – he did compete in the NPC and continues to track the sport closely to this day. This passion alongside his deep education and research has made him the perfect bridge between the love of bodybuilding and focusing on health. That’s why in our latest GI Exclusive partnered with Barbend, Jim Stoppani reacts to the current state of bodybuilding – including drug use and health dangers. Is it facing a crisis? Has it lost its way?
Competitive bodybuilding as we know it has existed in some form or another for at least 100 years. It exploded in the 60s and 70s during the Golden Era and has continued to break ground ever since. However, the world changes and with it the sport changes as well. With more history behind competitive bodybuilding, more criticism is brought up comparing the present to decades past. Is drug use worse? Are more bodybuilders dying? Are physiques today better or worse? The questions and criticisms are endless.
Much of the criticism is based on gut feelings, personal experience, or mob mentality. That’s why, during our conversation with Jim Stoppani, we asked him to share his reaction to bodybuilding today – combining his personal bodybuilding experience with expert researched knowledge. Cutting the bullsh*t from facts. Does Stoppani see a crisis in modern bodybuilding?
Jim Stoppani: “The Sport Is Not Causing Drug Use, The People Are”
Despite the recent news driving fear for the health of bodybuilding athletes today more than any other time in the history of the sport, Jim Stoppani still finds competitive bodybuilding a respectable sport as it is today. Stoppani does not believe that bodybuilding as a sport drives drug use – it’s the people and athletes behind it who do. But this isn’t just to lay the blame on athletes and call the irresponsible.
In fact, Jim Stoppani believes that the drive behind people to be the best in the world is what brings individuals to dangerous drug use. That’s not just in bodybuilding. That’s in every single sport in the world. Move beyond sports and it can be found in any arena where individuals strive to be elite.
Jim Stoppani, having competed in bodybuilding, understands the rare feeling of doing anything possible, including dangerous risks, to be the best in the world. To build one extra inch of muscle at all costs. It’s this drive that many average people, even bodybuilding fans, don’t really understand. Sadly, experiencing it directly is nearly the only way to truly understand it.
No matter the regulations or laws – people with this sort of drive will always find a way to possibly endanger themselves to be the best in the world. To be bigger and stronger at any cost.
Jim Stoppani Supports Education To Steer The Drive Behind Bodybuilders
So as Jim Stoppani understands it, professional and competitive bodybuilding will always be dangerous. Is it particularly more dangerous today than at any time in history? That cannot be proven without vigorous study. But what can be done, regardless of the current risks, is bring more education behind the strategies known in bodybuilding. We can’t remove the drive or the dark corners of markets to receive drugs – but we can help educate athletes further so they understand the risks.
Jim Stoppani respects bodybuilders. He loves the mass monsters all the way through to the Bikini competitors. He respects their drive despite limited prize money and, in some cases, even respect within their own sport. Jim Stoppani will not disparage the love that bodybuilders have for perfecting their physique. He can only hope to bring more education to help those driven athletes stay safer. It can never be completely safe – but to make it as safe as possible is most important.
Wrap Up
So is modern bodybuilding facing a crisis? Jim Stoppani doesn’t see anything particularly more dangerous now compared to the past. The danger has always been there – but technology has allowed us to see it faster and due to the immediacy of social media. That doesn’t mean that things can’t be improved. All professional sports are dangerous on some level – but their can always be more effort made to make it safer.
You can watch Jim Stoppani’s thoughts on modern bodybuilding and the current state of drug use and health in our latest GI Exclusive interview segment above!

IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Shane Post has been shot following a dispute over a parking space.
IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Shane Post was shot on Tuesday April 19th, 2022, according to reports from the Waxahachie Police Department. The shooting happened stemming from a dispute over a parking space. The altercation happened near a set of townhomes after 3 p.m.
Speaking with WFAA, Shane’s wife, Irina Post, stated she was waiting for her husband to get dropped off by a coworker in their gated parking lot. Shane’s coworker pulled into a neighbor’s parking spot to drop Shane off. This triggered the neighbor, Nikki Brown, to walk up and confront Shane Post over the parking spot.
“He came out in a robe, and he had already his gun loaded in his pocket,” Irina told WFAA. The Post family admits to having had two small run-ins with Nikki Brown previously – but nothing that led or presented violence.
Security cameras in the parking lot show Shane Post attempt to slowly walk towards Niki Brown. Suddenly, Brown pulled out his handgun and shot Shane in the torso. Shane is then seen stumbling and limping away from Brown.
You can watch the security camera video below:

The official Waxahachie Police department released the following statement on the incident:
“Officers immediately began life-saving measures until AMR arrived and transported him to Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Waxahachie. The suspect, identified as Nikki Brown of Waxahachie, was still at the location and taken into custody.”
Nikki Brown was arrested and taken to Ellis County jail but has since been released according to posts by Shane Post’s family. Brown also did not show up on the Thursday night jail roster. It was later confirmed that Brown had posted bond out of jail.
Shane Post’s mother commented to WFAA about the incident:
“I can’t process any of it. He was shot over a parking spot.”
Shane Post is an IFBB Pro bodybuilder who’s biggest accomplishments were earning first place at the NPC 2020 USA Championships and the 2017 Mr. Pittsburgh. Post’s pro career was just getting started. Though a massive injury such as this could be a career ending situation – thankfully Post is currently in stable condition at the hospital.
Shane Post, though stable, is still in the ICU at Methodist Dallas and will be held at the hospital for at least a week. He has major injuries in his liver, colon, pancreas, and urethra.

The family has stated that the bullet is still in Shane Post, and the doctors find it currently too dangerous to remove. It is believed that Post will be facing months of rehab after being released from the hospital.
The Post family has set up a GoFundMe page to help support Shane Post’s recovery and rehab. You can get more information and support the Shane family by donating right here.
Generation Iron’s entire staff is wishing Shane Post a smooth recovery and send well wishes to Shane, friends, and family during this difficult time. This story is still developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
‘A Bum In The Making’: Chris Bumstead Looks Crazy Impressive During Recent Physique Update
Chris Bumstead is working for a fourth consecutive Olympia title.
Chris Bumstead continues to make improvements to what already is a championship physique. The reigning three-time Classic Physique Olympia champion recently shared an update on social media where he is looking insanely impressive.
Bumstead looks primed and ready to make a run at his fourth consecutive title. After missing some time in the gym at the beginning of 2022, Bumstead is back and is showing crazy strength and progress.
The Classic Physique competitor contracted COVID-19 and was forced to miss time time in the gym while losing a significant amount of weight. After a few weeks on the shelf, Bumstead returned and is clearly back to his normal self once again.
“A bum in the making.”
Chris Bumstead remains active on social media sharing different workouts and diet plans, including his bulking diet during this phase of prep for the Olympia. Bumstead recently shared a massive chest workout that he uses to gain size. It is no surprise that Bumstead is one of the most popular bodybuilders in the sport given the rise of Classic Physique.
This is a division that some believe might take over bodybuilding. Bumstead won his first Olympia title back in 2019, defeating reigning two-time champion at the time Breon Ansley. Terrence Ruffin has risen to the top as well along with some newcomers. Ruffin has won back-to-back Arnold Classic titles and finished as the runner-up to Bumstead at the Olympia.
Bumstead knows that there is more talent coming and he continues to stay ahead of the game. Urs Kalecinski and Ramon Rocha Queiroz both finished ahead of Ansley during the Arnold Classic, which means there are two more elite competitors to watch out for.
At this point, there is not a competitor that has been able to top Bumstead and he wants to keep it that way. By the looks of his training and physique updates, Bumstead is right where he wants to be at this point in the offseason.
