Iconic Event ‘Mr. America’ Names Generation Iron Network Official Media Partner
Generation Iron Network to collaborate with Mr. America and CBS Sports Network for coverage, previews, and a behind-the-scenes look at the Mr. America 2021.
Generation Iron Network has announced that it will be the official media partner for the Mr. America 2021 contest and expo taking place in Atlantic City at the Showboat Hotel on October 9-10, 2021. Under this new partnership, Generation Iron Network will become the official news hub for all previews, updates, and coverage of the Mr. America 2021 event. The full contest will also be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network at a later date.
The Mr. America competition is a legendary event and one of the oldest major bodybuilding competitions in the history of the sport. Before the Mr. Olympia or the Mr. Universe – there was the Mr. America. First held on July 4, 1939 as “America’s Best Built Man,” the event quickly changed to what is now known as the Mr. America contest the following year. The event was first sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) but has since changed many hands over its near century long run.
After the AAU ceased holding contests in 1999, the Mr. America contest fell from the mainstream bodybuilding consciousness. The contest disappeared for many years only to change hands multiple times and return sporadically and inconsistently.
As of 2020, the Mr. America contest resumed as a non-sanctioned event promoted by Marc Tauriello of East Coast Fitness Concepts. Tauriello’s goal is to return the Mr. America to its former glory as the biggest bodybuilding event of the year.
“With the return of the Iconic Mr America in 2020 there has never been a more exciting time in drug free bodybuilding,” stated Marc Tauriello. He continued:
“Having Generation Iron as our official media partner for this iconic event in 2021 as well as being televised truly represents the significance of the Mr America, if it wasn’t for the Mr America, bodybuilding as a hole wouldn’t be what it is today.”
The Mr. America 2021 will be held in Atlantic City at the Showboat Hotel on October 9-10. It is a non-sanctioned event, meaning that a bodybuilder from any league or federation may compete – allowing for a truly open playing field of the best competitors in the world. The contest will also be drug tested under strict WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) guidelines. The Mr. America contest and expo will hold competitions for bodybuilding, powerlifting, Clash of the Tridents, Olympic Weightlifting, and MAS Wrestling.
CBS Sports Network will also be providing fully televised coverage of the Mr. America competition. The television coverage will not be live but broadcast at a later date. Generation Iron Network will provide full updates and announcements of the schedule, how to watch, and when to tune in.
Generation Iron Network first launched in 2013 alongside the release of the feature film – Generation Iron. It has since grown and expanded to be the leading media outlet for all things bodybuilding, fitness, and strength sports. Providing not only news coverage, Generation Iron publishes informative training/nutrition guides, original programming, reviews on top brands, distributes chart topping sports documentaries worldwide and covers exclusive video interviews with top fitness athletes.
Generation Iron will build strategic media campaigns focused on bringing the most engaging and up to date information and coverage of the 2021 Mr. America. The company will utilize its expansive media presence and its global digital subscriber base to re-introduce Mr. America events and athletes to viewers worldwide. The full contest will be a fully drug tested event and will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network at a later date.
“We are thrilled to team up with Marc Tauriello and the Mr. America team,” stated Executive Producer Edwin Mejia Jr. “Generation Iron is proud to cover the longest running bodybuilding contest in the country. and offer a whole new immersive experience for viewers worldwide.”
For the entire month of September leading up to the event, Generation Iron will provide a unique inside look into the Mr. America competition, its athletes, and the history of this prestigious event. Expect featured interviews with athletes set to compete, vital live event updates including:

Ryan Terry Answers: Does Respect For Men’s Physique From Men’s Open Bodybuilders Matter?
[embedded content]
Ryan Terry weighs in: Does it matter whether or not Men’s Open bodybuilders respect Men’s Physique?
Ryan Terry is an accomplished Men’s Physique competitor from the UK. Growing up, he was always inspired by the work ethic of Men’s Open bodybuilders – but he knew genetically he could never reach that kind of mass monster size. That’s why Men’s Physique ultimately was the perfect fit for him. Suddenly he can follow in the work ethic footsteps of bodybuilders he admired – but also compete with a smaller physique that better fits his goals.
It’s no secret that some (but not all) Men’s Open bodybuilders criticize Men’s Physique. There has been a long history of Men’s Open competitors jabbing or mocking Men’s Physique. Antoine Vaillant jokingly did a guest posing in board shorts. Bodybuilding legend and mass monster Paul Dillet called Men’s Physique at the Olympia “laughable.” The list can go on. Many of these men are bodybuilders that Ryan Terry always respected and looked up to. Does this kind of lack of respect bother him? In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Ryan Terry shares his thoughts on the relationship between Men’s Open and Men’s Physique.
We had a chance to connect with Ryan Terry via video chat and discuss his bodybuilding origins, opinions on trending topics, and his future plans. When discussing on how Terry discovered bodybuilding – it was clear he had a deep reverence for legends in the Men’s Open division. His step father was even a super heavyweight competitor during Terry’s childhood.
Ultimately, Ryan Terry wanted to apply the bodybuilding work ethic to his life. At first not to become a competitor – but to feel better about his body. He knew he could never be a mass monster but still wanted to train and build that kind of work ethic. He eventually discovered Men’s Physique and it was a perfect fit. He quickly went pro and has found great success in his bodybuilding career.
But does it bother him that the very athletes that inspired him – occasionally disrespect Men’s Physique. It ranges from innocent jokes to straight out comments diminishing the division. How does that affect Terry’s view of Men’s Open and the legends that motivated him?
Ryan Terry doesn’t think it matters much. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and Men’s Physique will remain a popular division regardless of what Men’s Open athletes think. While Terry would love to gain more respect from mass monster competitors – his respect for them remains. Their accomplishments and how they inspired future generations (such as himself) remain in tact.
“To be honest with you I respect all athletes,” Ryan Terry states in our interview. He continues:
“I respect them. I respect what they’ve achieved and stuff. I would love for them to acknowledge and respect what we do as well but I don’t lose sleep over it. That’s up to them. That doesn’t change the way I train. It doesn’t change the way I think about my sport. I can take it or leave it.”
Ryan Terry believes that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. What Men’s Open feel and think have no bearing on Terry’s life as a Men’s Physique competitor. It also doesn’t change what Men’s Open bodybuilders have achieved. So his respect remains in tact. He knows the kind of work ethic he puts in – and if Men’s Open want to acknowledge it, that’s fantastic. But if they don’t – that’s their decision. He’ll keep going forward with respect and hunger to improve and succeed.
You can watch Ryan Terry’s full comments about his bodybuilding origins, Men’s Open vs Men’s Physique, and more in our latest GI Exclusive interview segment above!
Top 5 Exercises For Bulging Biceps
Buy some tickets to this gun show.
If there’s one thing that draws people to weightlifting and maybe even bodybuilding as a whole – it’s getting bigger muscles to show off. Biceps are one of the top muscles that people want to have bulging and flexing at all times. It’s one of the main muscles that people can always see – so when you catch someone checking them out, you can wink and give a little nod of satisfaction.
To help you get those massive biceps that you crave or maybe just to help you make them a little bigger than they already are – here is our list of the top five exercises to boost bicep mass.
#5. Preacher Curls
Preacher curls are a fantastic exercise to help boost the building of muscle mass in your biceps. This exercise isolates your biceps allowing for full range of motion without the additional involvement of your shoulder muscles – thus maximizing work done to your biceps.
Simply sit on a preacher bench and rest the back of your arms on the pad. Adjust the seat so that your armpits are in line with the top of the pad. Grab onto the bar with your hands shoulder-width apart and palms facing outward – then start to curl.
#4. Reverse Grip Rows
Reverse Grip Rows will place a greater stress and pressure on the biceps as opposed to straight rows – this makes them better at targeting the bicep muscles. Once again, isolating the biceps specifically is the best way to maximize muscle growth – making this another excellent addition to your bicep workouts.
To perform Reverse Rows, stand erect while holding a barbell with the palms facing up. Bend your knees slightly and bend at the waist (make sure to keep your back straight).Lift the barbell while keeping your torso stationary and keeping your elbows close to your body. At the top contracted position, squeeze your back muscles and hold for a second – then slowly lower the weight back to starting position.
#3. Cable Bicep Curls
Cable curls are an excellent way to take care of that deep tissue muscle fiber. Because of the constant tension from the cable – hitting that area of your biceps is a perfect way to really bulk up those muscles as you train. You can also use a rope attachment to mix up the workout and really maximize how you pump your arms up.
Make sure to slightly bend your knees to take the stress off of your back. Curl and bring your hands towards your shoulders until you reach maximum contraction of the biceps. Then slowly return to the original position.
#2. Concentration Curls
If you do this exercise while sitting, you will strongly prevent the amount of moment that goes into the execution of the exercise – one again isolating and emphasizing the bicep muscle (getting the point yet?).
While holding your upper arm stationary, curl the weight forward while contracting the biceps. Make sure only the forearms move. Continue this movement until the dumbbells are at shoulder level. Then slowly return to the original position.
#1. Barbell Bicep Curls
The classic and king to bulking up your biceps. The key to this exercise is to make sure you get the full range of motion and don’t let momentum cause you to lean back as you lift. This common mistake will prevent the biceps from truly getting the workout you want them to have. Barbell curls will allow you to lift much more weight than many of the other exercises we put on the list – allowing you to really power up those biceps with this exercise.
While standing, hold the barbell at shoulder width grip. Palms facing forward and elbows close to the torso. Curl the weights up until shoulder level and then slowly lower the bar back down to original position. Easy as pie.
Between these five exercises you should already be on the path to truly mammoth biceps. Once you start to notice the difference – feel free to show them off. Find any excuse to show off those arms you worked so hard for.
What is your absolute favorite bicep workout? Sound off in the comments below and share your thoughts. You an also share with us on Facebook or Twitter as well. Stay pumped.
Cedric McMillan Withdraws From 2021 Arnold Classic
Cedric McMillan will miss the event while still recovering from injuries.
Cedric McMillan was forced to miss the 2020 Olympia because of different injuries and operations. He was expected to make his return during the 2021 Arnold Classic in September in Columbus, Ohio. McMillan recently announced that his plans for a return will have to be put on hold.
McMillan shared a post on Instagram detailing his most recent setback. He is still recovering from surgery to repair a broken hand. McMillan received this operation back in February and has been unable to train. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait to see McMillan back on stage.
“Just wanted to let everybody know I won’t be able to compete at the Arnold this year as I’m still recovering and the docs were like “uhh nope Mr McMillan”, this is the first year I’ve missed since my first one in 2013. I can’t wait to get back on that stage. But guess what, I will be there as part of the broadcast team!,” Cedric McMillan wrote.
“Hopefully me and Arnold can call the show together, that would be an honor for me. I hope to help bring a different feel and experience to all of you that will be watching the show online. Pray for me that I don’t say to many curse words haha”
The Arnold Classic has an impressive lineup for the event and McMillan was set to be one of the biggest names. This also impacts McMillan’s status for the 2021 Olympia. It is now likely that he will have to miss his second-straight competition unless he receives a special invitation and can accept it.
Cedric McMillan last competed during the 2020 Arnold Classic, where he placed sixth. His last victory came during the 2019 Romans Muscle Fest Pro Men’s Bodybuilding. McMillan has competed in each Arnold Classic since 2013 with his best finish coming in 2018 when he placed third.
McMillan did not provide any specific details on his latest setback but it is likely that he will not be back on stage for awhile. Fans are hoping that he can get healthy and back to competing soon enough.

Victor Martinez Defends Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Freedom Comments
[embedded content]
Victor Martinez reacts to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “Screw Your Freedom” comments.
Victor Martinez is a pro bodybuilder who is not afraid to speak his mind – but he’s also someone who likes to make sure he’s critically analyzed all the facts before he cements his opinion. That’s why he’s taken some time thinking over Arnold Schwarzenegger’s controversial freedom comments and the bodybuilding communities reaction to it. In our latest GI Exclusive interview, Victor Martinez explains his defense of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s freedom comments.
On August 13th, 2021, an interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger went viral across the bodybuilding, strength sports, and fitness community. Speaking on CNN, Schwarzenegger stated, “Screw your freedom” in response to Americans who were anti-mask mandates. You can see his full statement here. Schwarzenegger was stressing, albeit aggressively, that community health was more important than individual freedom where dangerous consequences could be endured.
The bodybuilding, strength sports, and fitness community ignited with many making statements on social media condemning Schwarzenegger’s statement. Some pulled down posters. In the biggest move, supplement company RedCon1 pulled out of sponsoring the Arnold Classic 2021 set to occur on September 25th.
Last week, we were able to reconnect with Generation Iron alum and pro bodybuilder Victor Martinez. During our catch up, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s comments were brought up. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, Martinez defended Schwarzenegger and his statements. He also weighed in on the bigger fitness community’s angry reaction to the statement.
“You don’t need to explain it to me. I saw it. I saw it one time. I saw it one time and for some reason, yes, I know what he said, you know – ‘Screw your freedom.’ That became the focus,” Victor Martinez states in our interview. He continues:
“…There’s certain things you say where you think you can say them and right now a lot of people are too soft. They’re too soft on words. They’re too soft on what they hear. They jump the gun on smallest thing that really is irrelevant to what the person really is. I mean, I think Arnold is more American than most Americans actually.”
Not only does he think that people as a whole have become too sensitive. He also thinks they are misinterperating what Schwarzenegger really meant when he stated, “Screw your freedom.” Martinez goes further to try and explain his viewpoint:
“He didn’t say screw your freedom like when America became free in 1776 on July 4th and they declared their freedom… that’s not the kind of freedom Arnold said you know. Be responsible with your freedom, you know? Yes you are free but that doesn’t mean be carelessly free, you know? Wear your mask.”
Ultimately, Victor Martinez still holds extreme respect for Arnold Schwarzenegger. He finds that he has not only given back to the bodybuilding community throughout his entire life – but he’s also given back to America since becoming a citizen. This is a trying time for many people across the world. It’s causing gut reactions and bold statements that might be a bit too black and white.
It seems that Victor Martinez is trying to see the grey and the nuance during these troubling times. He believes Arnold Schwarzenegger believes in freedom but he also believes in responsibility. Do you agree or still find Schwarzenegger’s comments a step too far?
You can watch Victor Martinez’s full comments in our latest GI Exclusive interview segment above and decide for yourself!
Why Do Pre-Workouts Make You Itch?
Pre-workouts can make you feel itchy and twitchy which can disrupt your workouts and leave you with an uncomfortable jittery feeling.
Pre-workout supplements are widely popular products used to provide a solid boost of energy for all of your pre-workout needs. Designed to get you primed and ready for big lifts, a solid pre-workout supplement can increase muscle pumps, enhance motivation and focus, and provide for a serious boost of energy as you enter the gym. While there is debate around pre-workout supplements, for some believe you can simply get this energy from a cup of coffee or just sheer will to train, they are still widely hailed as effective and useful products to add into one’s supplementation routine.
But unfortunately some, if not most, pre-workout supplements contain ingredients that are not helpful and that you just don’t need in your body. These added ingredients and artificial additives and sweeteners may not be directly harming you, but are simply ingredients that have no business being in your supplements. A common side effect of pre-workouts is a jittery, itchy, and twitchy feeling, making you feel uneasy and way to hyper to be lifting big weights. While this feeling my be solely uncomfortable, why go through this and have your mind elsewhere other than your lift?
Let’s look into pre-workout supplements and what makes them itchy. That obnoxious, jittery feeling doesn’t have to be there and you should know there are alternatives to avoid this. Make the most out of your lifts without sacrificing your health.
What Causes This Itchy Feeling?
One of the main culprits is Beta-Alanine, a common ingredient in many pre-workouts. Even in small doses, Beta-Alanine is known to cause tingling and that itchy feeling that just sucks all around (1). But Beta-Alanine isn’t the only thing that can cause this feeling. Niacin, another active ingredient, offers the same affect but is cheaper to add than Beta-Alanine.
A common reason why companies put such high amounts in their pre-workouts is that you can feel when the product is working. By coming down with that itchy and twitchy feeling it will mentally let you know that your body is now primed for whatever activity comes next. But do you really need to know that your pre-workout is working if it’s high quality?
What Is Paresthesia?
Paresthesia is the name for this tingling and itchy feeling that you often feel in your face, neck, and hands without really being able to nail down the exact spot (2). This typically feels like a tingling feeling across your whole body, flushing of your skin, slight numbness, and that all too familiar pins and needles feeling. This uncomfortable feeling is again how companies alert you that your pre-workout is working. But that feeling can sometimes be too strong to actually get a good workout in.
Is The Twitchy Feeling Harmful?
There is no real evidence that this feeling is harmful to you, but the fact that is uncomfortable should be cause to stop and rethink if you really need a pre-workout, or at least make you question if you have the right one. Just because it isn’t harmful to you, this doesn’t mean that you have to settle. There are strongest pre-workouts around that will give you the same benefit without totally ruining a potentially great workout.
Does Beta-Alanine Actually Work?
Some would ask why Beta-Alanine is still used if it just causes an uncomfortable itchy and twitchy feeling. The answer is because it has proven benefits to aid in exercise performance (3). Beta-Alanine can elevate carnosine levels which can reduce acidity in the muscles and lead to a more productive workout without fatigue settling in. Beta-Alanine itself can work to prolong your time to exhaustion and increase muscle endurance, especially during resistance training where you’re at an increased volume with less fatigue.
Can You Prevent This Itch?
There is really no way to prevent his itch unless you change your dose to a smaller amount. With pre-workout, this unfortunately doesn’t make sense because you need the full dose for it to affect your workout. This is where you should consider changing your pre-workout product or looking for alternative ways to get that desired boost.

Build Shredded Legs With This Dumbbell Workout
There can be many reasons why people don’t want to use a barbell. It could be because of a back pain or your general dislike for the barbell that you want to stay away from it. It is said compound movements with a barbell are the best way to build big legs.
This is complete BS! Your muscles have no idea if you’re using a barbell or dumbbells. All they know is if you have trained them to failure. You can completely eliminate barbells and other machines from your leg workouts and still build monster wheels.
1. Goblet Squats – 3 Sets 15 Reps
Goblet squats can be a life saver if you’re suffering from a back injury. This exercise forces you to keep your back straight and hence eliminates all the tension from it. Goblet squats target your quads and will leave you limping by the time you’re done with this exercise.
Stand with your feet slightly wider than shoulders width apart. Hold a dumbbell in front of your chest with both your hands. Perform a squat until your hams touch your calves. Keep your back straight, and head and chest up.
2. Dumbbell Lunges – 3 Sets 15 Reps On Each Leg
The range of motion is the key while performing this exercise. Most people make the mistake of placing their feet way too far apart or way too close to each other. Use weights with which you can complete 30 reps in one set.
Your front knee should not extend farther than your big toe and the quad of the second leg should be parallel to the calf of the front leg while you’re at the bottom of the movement. This is the optimal position to perform dumbbell lunges.
3. Dumbbell Romanian Deadlifts – 3 Sets 10 Reps
Dumbbell Romanian deadlifts are one of the best exercises to target your hams. Using dumbbells instead of a barbell will help you increase your range of motion. Barbells can limit your motion by making you follow a straight line of movement.
Using dumbbells lets your arms free and you can follow a movement where you have the greatest amount of tension on your quads. Most people complain about lower back recruitment while using a barbell, this problem is eliminated when you use dumbbells.
4. Dumbbell Step Ups – 3 Sets 12 Reps On Each Leg
Dumbbell step ups are a complete leg buster. This exercise will set your quads on fire. If you don’t have access to an elevated platform at your gym, you can use a flat bench for this exercise.
Stand while facing the platform with dumbbells at your sides. Step onto the platform with your right foot, extend your right leg and hip at the top of the movement. Place your left foot on the platform as well. Step down with your left foot and repeat with the right leg.
5. Dumbbell One-Legged Deadlifts – 3 Sets 12 Reps On Each Leg
Dumbbell one-legged deadlifts are a unilateral exercise. Unilateral exercises are the ones which work one side of your body at a time. This can help with developing the muscles and strength on your weaker side.
One-legged deadlifts help with isolating the hamstring and establishing a mind-muscle connection. Hamstrings can be a hard muscle group to train and develop as you can’t see them in the mirror and hence it becomes harder to develop a connection with them.
Have you ever tried a dumbbells only leg workout?
