Strongman Gabriel Peña Does 600Lb Hatfield Squat, Builds Crazy Strength
Gabriel Peña recently hefted 600lbs in the Hatfield Squat. The strongman opted to build strength with the safety squat bar movement that marries utilizing both the upper and lower body.
Gabriel Peña opted to build strength in a way that will prevent injuries. Peña recently lifted 600lbs in the Hatfield Squat. While he could easily packed on a few hundred pounds to the bar, Peña decided to utilized a method that puts less stress on his body.
Ideally when a person trains they want to do so in a manner that keeps them from damaging themselves too badly. Sure, some pain is involved in building strength and muscle, but if it’s to a point that you’re too sore to train then it’s defeating the purpose. You want to be able to push yourself in the gym everyday in order to build quality strength and muscle.
Hatfield Squat for Massive Strength
As such Gabriel Peña chose the Hatfield Squat in order to work both his upper and lower body without putting undue stress on himself. The Hatfield Squat is certainly an interesting movement. Peña explained in depth about how he utilized the movement to help him build incredible strength.

Hatfield Squats can be a useful tool.
The unique motion forces a different type of communication between the upper and lower body.
The arms assist with the squat, requiring the lats to flex while the shoulders remain braced to the trunk. Although this particular lift is not in contests, the ability to seamlessly connect all 4 limbs into a full powerdrive is invaluable in Strongman.
Think of your start on a truck pull. Or even the drive from the chest to overhead on a log press (particularly how the lats and upper back behave when transitioning from the front rack brace to the press). It’s the arms and legs generating power at the exact same time.
I love using Hatfield Squats when my shoulders are sore, or my knees are feeling run-down and I still need to squat.
Typically, I’ll vary between explosive speed work (3-5 rep sets) and endurance/hypertrophy work (10-15 reps).

Gabriel Peña is looking strong and if he continues to train like this he could really take his strength to the next level. It will be interesting to see in the coming months if this kind of intelligent training pays big dividends.

Brian Shaw And Gabriel Peña Team Up For Massive Deadlift Session

Brian Shaw And Gabriel Peña Team Up For Massive Deadlift Session

Brian Shaw and Gabriel Peña recently shared a huge workout in Colorado.
It has become a tradition and popular style of training when two strongmen get together for a session. In this case, it was Brian Shaw and Gabriel Peña who were able to tea up in Shaw’s home gym in Colorado for a massive deadlift session.
Shaw is a four-time World’s Strongest Man champion who continues to perform near the top of the game. Peña has made a name for himself by pulling some massive deadlifts, using both the barbell and dumbbells. This is where the two got together for a session and Shaw shared the video to his YouTube page.

“Deadlift day is the best day.”
The workout for the two strongmen began with 15 minutes of single-leg Romanian deadlifts and reverse hypers. Shaw’s coach, Joe Kenn, added some chains on a loaded barbell while Shaw and Peña completed mid-shin paused deadlifts. The weight began at 225 pounds and it increased each set by 40 or 50 pounds.
After the paused deadlifts, the lifters moved onto vert pull deadlifts. This focuses on the eccentric part of the lift. The barbell began on blocks and Shawn and Peña pinned their shins against a T-bar. This forced their shins to remain upright and applies more tension to the posterior chain.
“That starting position is what we’re trying to emphasize…If it’s another way to fortify my deadlift…I’ve got an open mind and am ready to learn.”

Brian Shaw and Gabriel Peña focused on the eccentric portion of the movement but also wanted to make sure to work on explosive strength. The workout ended with yoke walks. The duo focused on exercises that will be present during some of the major strongman competitions.
Shaw is not a competitor in the 2022 Arnold Strongman Classic. He will plan to compete during the 2022 World’s Strongest Man competition. This will take place from May 24-29 in Sacramento. Shaw has a chance to tie Mariusz Pidzianowski for five victories, which is the most all-time. Shaw finished second during the 2021 show. He will also host the third annual Shaw Classic in 2022, which will take place from Aug. 13-14 in Loveland, CO.
Peña was forced to miss the 2020 WSM with a heart issue. He was named an alternate during the 2021 show and could be looking for a big return this year.
Brian Shaw and Gabriel Peña showed off their elite strength in this workout and that means they are working to do some impressive things in 2022. It will be interesting to see where the two strongmen go from here.

Gabriel Peña Becomes First Strongman To Achieve 500kg Axle Deadlift

Gabriel Peña Becomes First Strongman To Achieve 500kg Axle Deadlift

Gabriel Peña set a new world record in the Axle deadlift at 500kg.
It is always incredible to see a powerlifter reach new heights and Gabriel Pena did that over the weekend. The strongman recently competed in the 2021 Static Monsters Worldwide competition. This took place on Oct. 23 and Pena put on a show that we have never seen before.
Pena stepped up to the 16.75-inch axle wearing wrist straps, a lifting belt, and knee wraps. He completed a 500kg deadlift, which is a new world record. Pena became the first strongman ever to reach this number and he took to Instagram to celebrate his achievement.
“?WORLD RECORD?
I FINALLY HAVE MY OWN WORLD RECORD!!!
1,100 lbs / 500 kg at Static Monsters Worldwide in Harker Heights, Texas ?(16.75” Axle)
This Deadlift was for you Ricky @rd_strongman_36 . It was a pleasure lifting along with your boy today, and all the other athletes who came out in your honor. You’d be damn proud.Rest in power brother.”

The video shows how much effort this incredible lift actually took. Pena displayed strong technique and shaky legs until locked out and qualified the lift.
Gabriel Pena became the first strongman to accomplish this lift. The axle bar requires a higher grip because of the way the bar is shaped. This makes it a more difficult lift than that with a standard barbell.

This is not the first time that Pena has completed an enormous lift. This was his first record-breaking lift in competition but Pena has showed some impressive lifts in the gym. In June, Pena displayed a deadlift of 408.2kg (900lb) for a triple. He has completed a partial deadlift of 481kg (1,005lb) using an axle bar back in January.
This is not territory where many strongmen has gone. Anthony Pernice currently holds the world record for partial deadlift at 550kg (1,212.5lb). Eddie Hall and Mark Felix are other names that have made a living completing huge deadlifts. Pena has to be in the conversation now that he has completed a world record of his own.
Gabriel Pena was an alternate for the 2021 World’s Strongest Man competition. This year, he looks like he has a chance to compete with some of the other top competitors in the world. Confidence should be sky-high after a lift of this caliber and Pena will only continue to improve.
