Chris Bumstead Hits “Brutal Leg Day” During Recent Stage Of Olympia Prep

Chris Bumstead Hits “Brutal Leg Day” During Recent Stage Of Olympia Prep

Chris Bumstead hits a quad-pumping leg workout to solidify the entire package.
Chris Bumstead has one of the best overall packages on stage in bodybuilding. His overall motivation and drive in the gym is unmatched. Recently, Bumstead shared a brutal leg workout to pump his quads as Olympia prep continues.
Bumstead is the reigning three-time Classic Physique Olympia champion. He has been at the top of a division that continues to grow and have other competitors breakout. At 27 years old, Bumstead continues to improve and is working toward his fourth consecutive victory come December.
There was a bit of a hiccup in preparation as Bumstead battled COVID-19 at the beginning of the year and was forced to take some time off. He has returned to the gym and continues to build size and strength. Bumstead is back in the gym after five days off and decided to hit a huge quad workout.

Chris Bumstead Leg Day

StairMaster – Warmup
Alternating Single-Leg Extension – 2 sets for 20 or more reps
Hip Adduction Machine – 1 set for 6 reps
Smith Machine Squat – 2 sets for 11-12 reps
Alternating Single-Leg Press machine – 2 sets for 7-10 reps
Seated Calf Raise – 5 sets for 8-10 reps

“I took five days off training or so. I don’t know why but taking time off it should usually leave you feeling rested, but it leaves me feeling tired, tighter and more broken than I was before.”

Single-Leg Extension
Chris Bumstead begins the workout with a warmup on the StairMaster. This machine gets the blood flowing while activating the quads right away. Following the cardio work, Bumstead jumps right into volume completing 20 reps of single-leg extensions.
“That’s a lot of cardio. First exercise, single leg quad extension. Two sets of 20 reps or more. I hit 23 on the first set, 21 on the second, just trying to get a lot of volume.”
Hip Adduction Machine
Bumstead quickly moves onto the hip adduction machine. According to the video, he is on there for just one set. Bumstead likes to hit this machine before squatting because of the warmup it gives. Bumstead explains how this is a well-kept secret that others should try before attacking the squat rack.
Smith Machine Squats
Chris Bumstead opts for the Smith Machine squats for his next exercise. He hits two sets of 11-12 eps with a closed-stance. This is because it hits harder and gives a deeper burn in the quads.
“Anything over 10 kills me. I was trying to do a front squat closed stance. To really emphasize my quads. Second set was just high volume, closed stance, trying to burn my quads.”
Alternating Single-Leg Press Machine
Bumstead continued the trend of two sets on the leg press machine. He performed 7-10 reps per leg on this machine. Isolation avoids having one leg grow more than the other. This allows Bumstead to work both legs in the same way.
“Very simple, just a straight line movement. I’m doing one leg at a time, partly because I’m too lazy to put that many plates on.”
“I can get a little bit more range of motion to prevent one from being lopsided especially because I have a tight erector on my right side right now, which can cause me to favor my left leg.”
Seated Calf Raise
The final exercise of the workout is seated calf raises. It is important for bodybuilders to not forget about calves and Bumstead focuses on this during each leg day. During this exercise, Bumstead focuses on heavy weight.
“The first two was four plates, really heavy. My goal is to just do some heavy sets. My bro science thinking, if you walk all day on your calves, that’s high volume.”
Chris Bumstead is right on track with where he wants to be heading into July. It will be difficult for anyone to top him at the Olympia after three consecutive victories and another massive summer of prep. It will be interesting to see how he begins to finalize the product as we enter the summer and fall months.

Breon Ansley Shares Massive Leg Workout, Plans To Compete At 2022 Tampa Pro

Breon Ansley Shares Massive Leg Workout, Plans To Compete At 2022 Tampa Pro

Breon Ansley shared a workout that he is using ahead of the 2022 Tampa Pro.
Breon Ansley has been one of the top competitors in Classic Physique for years now and continues to compete at a high level. The former Olympia champ recently went thought a massive leg day and shared his plan to compete at the 2022 Tampa Pro.
Ansley won back-to-back Olympia titles in 2017 and 2018. The next year, he was defeated by Chris Bumstead and this is when he began his reign. In October, Ansley finished third at the Olympia, behind both Bumstead and Terrence Ruffin. Classic Physique is continuing to improve and that was on full display during the 2022 Arnold Classic.

In Columbus, Urs Kalecinski and Ramon Rocha Queiroz burst onto the scene even further. Ruffin won his second consecutive Arnold Classic but it was Queiroz who finished as the runner-up while Kalecinski finished third. Ansley was unhappy with his finish during this show and will undoubtedly work to improve his physique even further.
Breon Ansley Leg Day Routine
During a YouTube video Ansley shared, he showed off a mass-building leg workout but also revealed his plan to compete at the Tampa Pro this year. This is something that he did not share until this video was made.
“We are 16 weeks out from the Tampa. I was never really putting the show out there but you heard it here first, here now. You guys are definitely worthy of knowing the information first. My family. So that’s what it’s going to be guys. The Tampa Pro, 16-weeks out, I’m 197 lbs right now so I’m ahead of the game. I’m going to be at 180 at the weight cap in about another 10 weeks. So I want to be right at the weight cap 6 or 7 weeks out.”

Breon Ansley’s preparation continued in the gym with a massive leg workout featuring a “new master plan.” Ansley will focus on high-volume during this workout to remain leaner for a longer period of time.

Leg Extensions: 2 sets of 6, 1 set of 10
Lying Hamstring Curl: 1 set of 6, 1 set of 7, 1 set of 8
Smith Machine Squats: 1 set of 5, 1 set of 9, 1 set of 5
Bodyweight Bulgarian Split Squats: 1 set of 9, 1 set of 11, 1 set of 15
Sissy Squat Machine: 1 set of 5
Barbell Walking Lunges
Standing Calf Machine: 1 set of 5, 1 set of 8
Sitting Calf Machine: 1 set of 5

“This new master plan that we’re putting together this time, that’s going to be the difference. So if I’m leaner over a longer period of time, you guys know usually I’m at 180 like the last two days before weigh ins or the last day before weigh in.”
Breon Ansley has decided to step on stage prior to the Olympia to see the progress he has made. This is a measuring stick to how he will look come December. After the Arnold Classic, it is clear that Ansley decided to shake things up and will feature a new plan.

Derek Lunsford Takes Down 100-Rep Challenge Using 315-Pound Barbell Squats

Derek Lunsford Takes Down 100-Rep Challenge Using 315-Pound Barbell Squats

212 Olympia champ Derek Lunsford took on a new challenge during his leg day workout.
Derek Lunsford got over the hump during the 2021 Olympia and is now looking to remain at the top. The current 212 champion took on the 100-rep challenge during his most recent leg day sing 315-pound barbell squats. This came after some sets on other machines to get the maximum pump in his legs.
The 28-year-old bodybuilder has been consistent in the 212 division over the years but has been unable to reach the pinnacle. That changed in October when he beat Shaun Clarida, who was the favorite entering the weekend. Lunsford has a chance to make it two in a row this year and he is gearing up his prep toward that goal.

Lunsford went through a huge leg day workout and added a twist in the middle. It began with seated leg extensions and lying leg curls. He completed 15-20 reps during sets to get the necessary warmup before moving on in the workout. Lunsford spoke on leg days and how they are important to bodybuilding, despite not being a favorite.
“As much as it sucks in the moment, these are the days I live for. This is why I do what I do and I love it,” Derek Lunsford said.
Derek Lunsford began his quest for 100 reps in the middle of the workout. He loaded 315 on the squat rack and took down the first two sets of 20 reps with ease. Wearing a lifting belt, Lunsford attacked the third and fourth set, where he added an extra rep to make it 21. This is where it began to look a bit challenging.

This is no easy feat but Lunsford was dedicated to setting the goal that he set for that day. The fifth set was grueling but Lunsford tackled all 100 reps and was able to move on in the workout.
“I think if you look at yourself and say what is my best and can I beat it, you keep that as your focus, that’s a champion mentality man!”
Derek Lunsford finished the workout with two sets of leg press and standing single-leg curls. At this point, he had plenty of pump in his legs following his 100 reps on the squat rack.
There is no doubt that Lunsford is going to enter the Olympia this year looking his absolute best. With workouts and goals like this, Lunsford is building a championship physique and it will be exciting to see how it progresses over the summer.

Up Your Leg Game With These Forgotten Moves

Up Your Leg Game With These Forgotten Moves

There are some underrated moves to complete on leg day for maximum gains!
Leg day has come again, so it is time to leave your sweat and tears on the gym floor and to build that teardrop instead.
Today I am going to take it back to the old school with a couple of compound moves that you don’t really see anymore, and the reason for that could be that it is ‘out of sight, out of mind’, or that people are relying on machines instead.

Whatever the reason may be, you don’t have an excuse anymore.

Why compound movements?

Apart from being more efficient and working more muscle groups simultaneously, a study from 2017 concluded that ‘resistance training programs involving multi joint (compound) exercises appear to be more efficient for improving muscle strength and maximal oxygen consumption than programs involving single joint (isolation) exercises.’
So let’s look at forgotten exercise No. 1.

The Barbell Hack Squat
Many people are so used to using a hack squat machine that they have no idea as to the existence of this move.
Now the primary muscles targeted during this move are the quadriceps, but being a compound movement your hamstrings and glutes will be the secondary muscles involved.
How to do it:

Set up the bar as you would with a deadlift
But this time you will be standing in front of the bar, with the bar starting behind your heels
Feet shoulder width apart
Then grasp the bar with an overhand grip
Keep the back straight
Then lift the bar upwards, while driving your heels into the ground and contracting your quad muscles
Then slowly squat back down, and return the bar back to the ground
And repeat

Tip: Ensure not to graze the backs of your legs while doing this move, so if you are a beginner practice first.
Why should I add this?
The deeper your squat gets the better your athletic performance could potentially become, as a study from 2012 looked at the ‘influence of squatting depth on jumping performance’, and it found that ‘deep front and back squats guarantee performance enhancing transfer effects of dynamic maximal strength to dynamic maximal speed strength capacity of hip and knee extensors.
Even though this isn’t a front or back squat it could help improve those particular multi joint moves.
Now let’s look at forgotten exercise No. 2.

The Jefferson Squat
Now this is a move you may not have seen in your gym, but Kai Greene brought it back into prominence some years ago, and if Kai Greene uses this to help build his wheels, then why wouldn’t you add it into your routine?
Now another name for this lift is the straddle deadlift, as even squat is in the title it is performed in a deadlift fashion.
This is a quad dominant exercise but it will also target your adductors, glutes and hamstrings also.
What is the Jefferson Deadlift?
Essentially it is the same exercise, as you use the same stance, same grip, everything is the same except that the main difference between the two movements is the shape of your back and the joints being flexed.
As during the jefferson squat you keep your spine erect and back straight, as you want the emphasis to be on the knee flexion, during the jefferson deadlift you will lean slightly forward as the emphasis will be on hip flexion.
It may take some practice and some mind to muscle connection to differentiate between the two moves.
How to do it:

As mentioned before you will be straddling the bar using a split stance
Front foot will be facing out, with the facing away from you (so you will be in a right angle position, or L shape)
Squat down to pick up the barbell with the front hand using an underhand grip, and the backhand using an overhand grip
Keep the core tight
Then stand up and really emphasis the push through the heels and really pushing the knees out, do not allow the knees to cave in (pronate)
To ensure good depth, use smaller plates, and lighter weights to ensure immaculate form
The slowly come down back to the starting position
And repeat accordingly

Tip: If doing the jefferson squat ensure you do not round your back and be sure to keep the back foot on the floor at all times.
Why should I add this?
Although it looks awkward to set up, and yes it really can be, it is a great variant for anyone who cannot back squat and a study from 2015 ‘indicated that the deadlift exercise may be effective in decreasing pain intensity and increasing activity for most patients with a dominating pattern of mechanical low back pain.’
Yes I realise I am not talking about the jefferson deadlift variation but with the set up being the same, even though the deadlift technique is not mentioned by name in the study it should be applicable to the jefferson squat also.
There you have it, you now have two new badass compound moves you can add to your leg day armoury.
So until next time, keep pumping!

Blessing Awodibu Vows To Be In Best Shape Heading Into Competition: ‘I Feel Like This Is The Year’

Blessing Awodibu Vows To Be In Best Shape Heading Into Competition: ‘I Feel Like This Is The Year’

Blessing Awodibu shared a massive leg day workout where he said he will be at his best.
Blessing Awodibu is planning to return to the stage at the 2022 Indy Pro. He has made some improvements to his physique and has vowed to show up in his best shape. Awodibu recently shared a massive leg day and spoke on entering competition at his very best.
During his rookie year, Awodibu finished third at the Indy Pro before heading into the New York Pro. He wanted to earn qualification to the Olympia but finished sixth in New York with Nick Walker winning the show. This is when a feud began between the two competitors but they have since started training together.

Heading into the 2022 season, Awodibu knew some improvements that he had to make and has been focused on training. Recently, he took to YouTube to share a leg day workout that targets one area that Awodibu has been able to improve.
The 2022 Indy Pro will take place in May and Blessing Awodibu wants to make sure that he is at his absolute best.
“10 weeks out for the boogie man. I feel likes this is the year. You know, I’ll finally be able to give you guys what you guys deserve. I will finally be at my best. I truly believe it. This year, I will be at my best. My very best,” awodibu said.
I feel like my very best is an extremely dangerous look. I feel like it’s totally different from a lot of the people that you guys see now. I’m super excited man. The work goes on.”
Blessing Awodibu Leg Day

Awodibu explains that he was focusing on quads and gluten during this particular leg workout. His hamstrings were still feeling effects from last week and he wanted to take some time to recover.
“They still sore, they not fully recovered yet so I don’t really think it’s wise enough to train them today.
I’m not going to do hamstrings today. I’m going to push them to Friday. So that’s the end of my quad workout. Now, I’m going to blast a little bit of the glutes and then we’ll call it a day.”
This workout began with leg adductors and leg extensions. This was a way for Blessing Awodibu to pump blood into the legs before hitting 10 sets of 15-20 reps squatting on the Smith Machine. He then continued with four sets of 15-20 on leg press to continue heavy work on his quads. Awodibu finished with sets of flute extension, hip extension, and leg abductors.
Blessing Awodibu continues to be a rising star in bodybuilding and he is ready to show it on stage this year.
