The two stars first fought in September 2014 at UFC 178 when they were both making their way up the featherweight ranks. McGregor defeated Poirier by first-round TKO and eventually became a champion at 145 and 155 pounds as well as one of the most popular fighters in MMA history, while Poirier has also excelled at lightweight capturing an interim title at UFC 236.[ #InAbuDhabi | @VisitAbuDhabi ] pic.twitter.com/fbvMEO2RBE

Their clash promises to have major ramifications on the UFC’s lightweight landscape, with the status of champion Khabib Nurmagomedov still unclear following his retirement in October. Nurmagomedov has said in several interviews that he does not plan to compete again, but UFC President Dana White plans to meet with Nurmagomedov in January and the title has not officially been vacated.
