Conor McGregor proposes creation of ‘McGregor Belt’ ahead of potential Dustin Poirier trilogy bout

On Wednesday, McGregor tweeted out that he would like to see a “McGregor Belt” created for his next fight, which is expected to be a trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier that would take place at UFC 264 on July 10 in Las Vegas.
Along with the request, McGregor shared a clip from a pre-fight press conference for UFC 196, when he first moved up to welterweight to fight Nate Diaz.
“I feel it’s time to break out this baby for the next fight,” McGregor wrote. “I ask the UFC to please create The McGregor Belt. I suggest rose gold and rubies. Think Patek rare.”
“Or yellow gold and emeralds possibly,” he continued. “Might be nice also. I’m open to design suggestions. Let’s link up, UFC #TheMcGregorBelt”
McGregor is a two-time UFC champion, having previously held the featherweight and lightweight titles. He is the first fighter in UFC history to have held two titles simultaneously.
The prospective bout with Poirier marks the third meeting between the two stars. McGregor won the first meeting back when both men competed at featherweight, winning by TKO in 1:46 at UFC 178 in September 2014. They rematched at UFC 257 this past January and the outcome was flipped as it was Poirier who earned a TKO victory at the 2:32 mark of the second round. Poirier and UFC President Dana White have indicated July 10 as the targeted date for the trilogy bout.
With Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler battling for the lightweight title recently vacated by the retired Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 262 on May 15, there was some confusion as to why Poirier—currently No. 1 in the UFC’s official lightweight rankings—was not part of that equation. In the end, Poirier ultimately chose another lucrative matchup with McGregor instead, which lends credence to McGregor’s theory that a title with his name on it could be considered just as valuable (if not more so) than a UFC belt.
