Dr. T Talks to Concerned Parents About Teen Steroid Use

George Touliatos, MD is writing about teen steroid use in an upcoming column of Ask Dr. T, to be published in the print edition of Muscular Development. Dr. T would like to share the information now and make it public. It’s good advice for parents of teenage boys (and some grown men) who may be looking at steroids as an option, or even taking steroids based on the advice of a “buddy” who holds no degrees or certifications on the subject. The most important advice George always gives is, “Know your facts. Speak to your health care professional.” If your health care professional isn’t knowledgeable about it, find one who is and get the right information. Lastly, watch Ask Dr. Testosterone with Dr. George Touliatos and MD’s Online Editor, Ron Harris, every Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. EST right here at www.musculardevelopment.com, or via any of our social channels – i.e., YouTube, Facebook, Twitter. Teen AAS Use

Q: My son is in his late teens. He works out all the time. I overheard him talking to friends and I think he's considering the use of AAS. What do you say to him?

A: First of all, each candidate of AAS use has to be over 18, in order to officially become an adult. Being an adult medically means that his hormonal system is fully developed and he has already reached his adult height. As a former athlete, my perspective is to first reach your genetic potential after years of consistent training and supplement use. Afterward, you really need to put things down and find a good reason for this. In other words, if you aren’t talented or genetically gifted to compete, there is no point in trying and taking the risks. However, each of us is free to do whatever he wants, for his own reasons. Therefore, I suggest you to get informed in the first place by literature regarding the use of AAS/PEDs use in sports. Afterward, you can decide on your own under full responsibility and being aware of the potential side effects of gear use. Finally, you should find an opened-minded physician who is willing to assess your labs and your overall health condition. Medical prevention is the key to longevity.

Supplements Lead to Gear?

Q: Parents usually are concerned about early supplement use by teens that might later be the pre-entrance to gear. Is this an option?

A: Yes and no. For an ambitious individual who faces body dysmorphia, and his motto is let the sky be my limit, or more is better, there is a case that initially you try a wide variety of ergogenic supplements that along with proper nutrition and regular training program, will eventually lead you to your genetic potential. Afterward, steroid candidates ask for the next level, which inevitably will be the use of PEDs. On the other hand, there are casual people who will follow a healthy lifestyle without having major expectations and are satisfied with their progress out of supplements. So basically, it’s up to the person and his goals.

Thanks, George, for sharing this with us.
