High Triglycerides: Lowering With Diet, Supplements

By George Touliatos, MD

Q: My father recently found out that his triglycerides levels are quite high (almost 300). What can he possibly do to lower them without medication, or is it necessary to use certain drugs to come back to normalcy?

A: Triglycerides are quite often accompanied with HDL and interact each other. Firstly, you need to be fasted strictly for 12 hours before having a blood work. Follow a low-fat, clean diet the day before. But in general you should avoid eating fried food (trans fat), refined sugars and junk food. Consume vegetables, olive oil, walnuts and plenty of fatty fish (salmon, sardines, trout, mackerel) while take DHA/EPA 500mg daily with each meal. Make sure your omega-3 supplement comes from fish and not plant sources (it’s way superior).

An alternative choice would be krill oil (coming from shrimp) that is rich in astaxanthin, an antioxidant carotenoid that prevents oxidation of lipoprotein fragments. However, in case triglycerides remain >150, you should consider the use of fibrates and get an abdominal ultrasound to exclude any case of pancreatitis.
