Steroids and Thinning Hair

Are There Scalp-Friendly AAS?

By George Touliatos, MD

Q: Which steroid is more friendly to the scalp, in order to avoid hair thinning (androgenic alopecia)? And what to avoid in particular?

A: Actually there’s only one steroid that doesn’t metabolize to DHT, but to a less androgenic compound. Nandrolone is metabolized to DHN, or dihydronandrolone, that doesn’t affect the prostate and hair compared to dihydrotestosterone. You can combine testosterone and nandrolone, as long you take anti-androgens, or 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (finasteride-Propecia, dutasteride-Avodart) and not to worry about hair thinning. On the other hand, avoid the DHT derivatives (oxandrolone-Anavar, oxymetholone-Anadrol, stanozolol-Winstrol, methenolone-Primobolan) and the synthetic forms of DHT, mesterolone-Proviron and drostanolone-Masteron.
