Shuttle to Overhead Recap
The first heat for the women consisted of 19 athletes. Up and down the field they ran, with 100 points awarded to whoever achieved the fastest cumulative run time during the three running portions of the event. Turner scored five jerks within the time cap to lead the heat after the first round.
Round two extended the run by an additional 200 meters. Miga?a was in front of the pack for the bulk of the second run, reaching the barbell first for the second straight round. She had 30 seconds to add as many jerks as she could to her total.
After a two-minute break, the athletes darted down the field for the final 800-meter run. For reference, that’s just shy of a half-mile. The pacing was identical to those of the first two rounds, with Miga?a leading the heat. She scored the fastest run time in the heat, as well as the most jerks with 12.
Heat two got underway, and expectations were on Toomey to turn on the jets to make up for a lackluster Day One. At the one-minute mark, it was Haley Adams setting the pace. Brandon and Toomey both scored five jerks in the first round.
Adams led the 600-meter run from start to finish, extending her lead to secure the 100 points on the line. Toomey was in second place in the run with a wide gap between her and Adams, but it appeared as though Toomey was turning on the jets right before the second round of jerks. Toomey had 11 reps unofficially at the end of the round, with O’Brien and Brandon one rep behind her.
It was apparent that Adams’ stride and pace in the run were insurmountable. Toomey, again, held plenty of distance for second place. Adams lapped the back end of the field with one lap to go before the final round of jerks. She finished the run with about 50 seconds to jerk as many reps as possible.
Toomey extended her lead in the jerks by a pair of reps by the time O’Brien finished her run. Toomey picked up a share of first-place points for her 18 total jerks. Adams scored her second 100-point get of the competition for the fastest cumulative run.
Men’s Heats
Karavis was the first to make it through the run, which matters for a cumulative time, but it wasn’t by a wide enough margin to offer any extra time on the barbell. The of the field flew to their respective blocks shortly after. Bayden Brown had the fifth fastest time in the first run but led the field in the second. With 10 seconds before the end of the final round, Saxon Panchik, Jayson Hopper, and Brent Fikowski all led in the jerks with 10 reps each.
The final run did not see any one athlete emerge to take an early lead. Halfway through the run, Panchik had a few body lengths between him and the second nearest competitor on the far end of the field. By the end of the run, Panchik narrowly crossed the finish line first and got a one-rep lead over Hopper. Panchik finished with 17 total reps, one more than Hopper.
Garard, Medeiros, and Vellner ran next to each other in the center of the field. It appeared Garard has a very slight lead early not, but it wasn’t enough to leverage a significant advantage in the jerks. Garard held the lead in the jerks momentarily until Adler’s prowess with the barbell moved him up the leaderboard. Adler closed the first round with six reps.
In the second round, Upenieks made his presence known as he throttled to a huge lead of half the field’s length. He was 10th overall entering this event, and apparently, his strategy was to move faster as the rounds progressed. Round one was close, round two was a blowout. Upenieks reached his barbell with 40 seconds to spare. Adler continued asserting himself on the jerk portion, reaching 12 reps by the time the whistle blew.
Upenieks continued his brisk pace in the final run, but Moorad also switched into high gear for the final 800-meter fun. Garard was still in the mix, and Adler was tight on his heels. Adler wasted no time furthering his lead in the jerks, exceeding the max rep count from the first heat. Adler picked up 100 points with 19 reps.
For reference, the tiebreaker for athletes who tied on reps in the jerk was cumulative run time. So the athlete with the faster run ranked higher despite having equal reps in the jerk.
