Florida Teacher In Trouble Over Condom On Banana
A Florida teacher is facing the sack after getting pupils to put a condom on a banana while Christmas carols played in the background.
Colin Nicholas says the lesson was designed to show pupils at Gulf Coast High School in Naples how to practise safe sex.
But local education chiefs say the health teacher showed poor judgment and that condoms have "no place" in local public schools.
Mr Nicholas picked two volunteers, a boy and a girl, to come up to the front of the classroom before dimming the lights.
He then put on Christmas carols, the only music he had to hand, and got the girl to put the condom on the banana while the boy held it.
He said: "It wasn't merely a demonstration of how to place a condom over a banana.
"But it was a role play simulating a situation students could find themselves in and help them act responsibly in such a situation."
The Naples Daily News says Nicholas is now on paid leave while the school board investigates the incident.
One student is believed to have complained. A decision on Mr Nicholas's future will be made at the end of the month.
