Sleeping patterns

Alright, i just got home from school for the summer and right away i jumped into my job, which im not going to disclose, but i work 7 days a week and im up at 420am and since i just cant pass out at 8pm everyday of the summer i know i am going to get some serious lack of sleep. I have been laying down around 915 once the sun is totally down and pass out around 945-10pm, so im only getting about 6 hours, sometimes 5 hours of sleep a night. I understand the fact that sleeping=growing and repair, but is getting only this amount of sleep going to throw off my muscle repair in any serious way? Does anyone else have this type of insane schedual? What do you do about it and has it affected your muscle growth?

man im kinda in the same boat as you know my knew job im workin nights i would think that it would def. affect you if your only getting 6 hours instead of 8 if your getting 8 right now but i think that if you get a decent amount of sleep as it may still hinder you a little bit it couldnt be a hole hell of a lot cause of two hours. It may mean more then i know though bump for anybody else.

yeah bro, it's going to affect you but you need to give your body time to adapt. I would take the first week off from training to let your circadian rhythm and body adjust to the new schedule... Make sure when you do start training that you give yourself adequate recovery time because it's going to be really easy to overtrain while working that many hours and not getting a whole hell of a lot of sleep. How physical is your jobe bro? Hit me up with a PM if you want bro.

It takes awhile to get used to the schedule, but soon your body will adapt and you will be able to continue growing/feel somewhat rested. I work different shifts every 2 months so I never really get used to my shift. Be glad you are not in my boat. lol. I go from days waking up at 4:50am to working swings 2-10pm to working graveyards 10pm-6am to working weekend graveyards 6pm-6am and wed/thur or thur/fri 6am days shifts.

It's rough on my body and I'm pretty much always tired. Swing shift isn't too bad however. I can stay up late and wake up late. early day's and graveyards are the hardest for me.

The only advice I can give you is try to go to bed early. If you make it to bed by 8:45-9pm at the latest it will make such a big difference.

Consistancey is key, get in a routine and stick to it. You have to make sacrifices, I know being young, you can't just go to bed at 8. But, one way or the other, something has got to give (money, muscle, or social time).

Jay's right bro, I bet if you climbed into bed at 8:00pm you'd fall asleep by 8:20pm and that would get you the 8 hours you need. If you're training hard and eating right you should be OK and will probably pass out by 8pm anyway. good luck bro and keep us posted

Yea, im sure once this rolls on some more and i am deep into this schedual and it gets busier Ill be exhausted by 8 and pass out around then. It wasnt too bad today, i fell aslepp around 9 and got up at 415 so thats 7 hrs and 15min. Its getting better and i dont mind not having much of a social life while im home, the only thing i really miss is hanging out with some friends past 9 but after that theyre normally pounding beers so its even better that im not there. The dough is really good and Im working with one of best friends so i enjoy it. Thanks for all your responses guys, much appriciated. Ill be hitting the sac earlier and earlier untill i can get a solid 8 hours down.

nice glad its startin to fallinto place for ya vertigo im sure it will continue to get better

Thanks bro, im already gettin tired and its 6, i think im gonna lay down at 8. I dont even care already LOL. Im off work, showered and ready to go at noon most of the time now and will be so i can just get off, train, go out to the ocean for a few hours and come home, shower, watch the simpsons and sienfeld and pass the fuck out. How are you dealing with your job gbart, i have a friend that does the graveyard shift. how long do you have to do that for?

One thing that will help you maintain your schedule, is that you need to make it dark when you go to sleep if you haven't. The body functions in a rhythm that is controlled by light. If you consistently have it completely dark when you need to go to bed and you have a light come on when you need to wake up, your body will adapt to that schedule. (A light that gradually turns up in brightness would be the best.)

At 420 when im gettin up its still dark out (weird) but not bad. I seem to have a reall good internal alarms clock that gets me up about 10 minutes before my alarm goes off every night. Its hard though when i lay down at 830 and its still light out. Its almost impossible to pass out then.

haha yeah i like it bro i really do i work from 12 to 8 im a very sociable guy usually but i really like to have my alone time so its really a good deal for me. And on the weeknights i dont do anything so it helps me get my rest and train better. I work from 12 to 9 tuesday morning through friday morning then sat. 12 p.m to 6p.m. so im off sunday and monday during the day so its really not that bad 38 hours or so. i get my cardio and shit done during hours so its cool it doesnt take away from my day or my rest periods where exactly are you working vertigo?? yeah and in my room i have my mirror completely blocking my window so its almost pitch dark in here all the time so that def. helps try putting a blanket or somethin over your window in the curtains or somethin bro.

That's kind of what I was talking about. You have to cover windows and such so that when you turn out the lights your room is completely dark. That's how the body knows it is time to go to sleep--by the dark and light. So if you make it pitch black at 8:00 p.m. consistently, your body will learn to sleep at that time.
