Heavy squats

Guys, looking for come advice/ criticism. I do legs once a week, with every second week starting with heavy squats. Im the kind of guy who cannot have a "light" day. I see the heaviest stack and I just want to fucking slam it! Anyway, Im just a bit under 200 lbs. Ive been squatting 405 for 6 to 8 as a heaviest set. Id like to try 500 next week for a single, I think I can do it. What do you think, am I being too eager? I mean I really dont want to hurt myself but have no back problems at all. Thanks in advance.

People "smaller" weight wise have squat more and if you're doing 405 for 8 I'd bet you could squat 450-465 now. So just SLOWLY add the weight and keep good form. I would recommend a 4x4 routine where you work up to your heaviest set and do 4 sets of 4. moving the weight up 5 lbs or so every week.

Stick with just the 4x4's even if you can push more weight, dont. Just slowly move up the weight and see if you can get to your goal.

I am guessing you can.

Good luck

If you do try it, make sure you have side spots just in case. This way you don't have to worry about hurting yourself, if you get stuck, just let them take it. You'll have a lot of peace of mind with them there and can concentrate on the weight. The most I ever squatted was 500 at 180 pounds and I had 3 spotters just in case, it never hurts to have them there even if you know you can do it. Shit happens and things can go wrong, just no sense in not being prepared.

Is it worth it for 1 rep knowing that the risk of injury is so high? I got up to 500lbs at a bodyweight of high 250's but I also was able to do 10+ reps. Even then 500lbs is scary. I'll be apprehensive working back up to it.

Great Advice! Also crank Rage Against the Machine "Know Your Enemy" it's been proven to add 50 lbs to your squat! :satan:

if you do plan on trying a one rep max, just make sure your warmed up really good, and try not to do it at the end of a squat sessions. so many guy pre exhaust their legs them try to max out... BIG mistake.

warm up with a few sets of high rep, medium weight leg extentions... then 2 sets high reps light weight squats.... then the muscle will be full and ready

i agree with what was said here. When your off, its easier to maintain heavier pondage's when your doing it this way (method above) vs going for the 1-2 rep max.

Thanks for all the replies. Will take the advice that I should go slow. I may try 455, see how that works out for me. I have a really bad attitude though and its gonna be hard loading a 25 instead of a pancake! Thanks again.
