Benefits of Shrugs for Men and Women

Men and women often do weight training exercises for different reasons. Many men want to develop as much muscle as possible, and many women simply want to lose weight and have toned muscles.
Every exercise can help to achieve both goals depending on how you use the exercise. If you lift really heavy weights and perform 3-6 sets per exercise, that's more conducive to building maximum strength and maximum muscle. If you lift moderate to light weights, with 1-3 sets per exercise, that's more conducive to improving general fitness, strengthening, endurance, and toning.
Strong Trapezius Muscles are Important for Everyone!
Many people feel tension in the trapezius from poor posture, stress, or carrying heavy objects. The trapezius muscle helps to keep your shoulder up, so every time you hold something in your hands the trapezius muscle is stressed.
Whenever you place a bag over your shoulders the trapezius muscle is stressed. And because the trapezius muscle attaches to and supports your head, every time you are upright your trapezius muscle is stress.
The trapezius muscle only gets a break when we lie down, so it works for almost the entire day. This is why so many people feel tension in this muscle. Strengthening the trapezius is one way to decrease the tension and support this muscle.

as a PT I have my women do these, and they always ask, "are women supposed to do these?"

I went through that with my girl. She had knots in her lower traps by her scapula and frequently got headaches. Now that we've built up her shoulders and traps (she can do 315 for 20 solid reps on shrugs) the knots are almost gone and she rarely has headaches.

I usually get tension headaches the day after heavy traps, but yeah I dont ever see any women doing them at all

Thats retarded. I dont even go over 225 when I shrug. I love the high rep low weight on this exercise. I used to think I had to shrug 500lbs to get big traps. Heck sometimes I'll just rep out 135 for about 50 reps. Nothing burns like these burn. But 315 for 20 for a girl her size is just crazy.

You're a fucking spark plug and build muscle by driving by a gym. Not all people are like you! You don't have tendons, you have titanium cords and you can pick up anything you can wrap your hands around or get under

i never liked shrugs. rackpulls and deadlifts have always been enough indirect work to build my traps

I shrug HEAVY and my traps are big. NOTHING beats heavy weight. There is a thickness that comes with heavy weight...having said that, I will change it up and do sets of 30-40 from time to time and never go over 315lbs.

I'm much like you, one week a month I go as heavy as I can and keep strict form, but most weeks I only work up to 275 for 25 reps. I'll go 135 for 40, 225 for 30 and 275 for 25 pretty much all the time. Or until my grip goes out, being that I do these on back and bi day, I normally don't have much strength left at the end of the workout
