Bodyfat, you have more than you think.

Ok Im not trying to bust balls or nothing, but I see this alot. People put up there bodyfat %, but I can bet that 99% of them I see is way off. For those of you who think you know, tell how you came up with that number?

Yeah, that and how big my waist is...I know that right now at 36 3/4 inches, im about 2 1/2 inches away from being close to contest shape...Once I hit 35 to 35 1/2 inches im in really good shape (hard abs, very lean, but not contest lean) Once it gets down to 34 1/2 and lower, im in great shape...:tread:
 
regardless of whether or not its 100% accurate, as long as the number is going down from where it was when i first did it a month ago, ill be happy

That's kind of how I feel too. Not so concerned with the actual number, as long as the method is consistant I can tell if I'm making progress.
 
Isnt a water tank and seeing how much water you displace the only accurate way?
 
i just do a guestimate by how veiny i am and if i can see abs, right now im about 13% guestimate, I really dont care about the number to be honest as long as i look the way im wanting to. Some guys at 15% look like 12 and some at 12 look like 15 plus calipers can vary up to and sometimes more then 3% depending on water weight etc. but i definitely agree with you nuk some people claim to be in the single digits without even abs visible lol.
 
7-site skinfold test with calipers. Not perfect, but good enough to show progress over time.

Isn't there somthing called a dexascan (not sure the correct spelling) that you can do that will measure exactly how dense your muscles are n what your bf ratio is..

If you can find a water displacement tank, this is the best.
Most gyms won't have it- a lot of rehab facilities do.
Those Tanita scales- don't work either.
If you can find someone that can do the skinfold analysis properly , it is a decent directional number....
 
7 site calipers, but only at the start and throughout contest prep. Offseason I just make sure I can clearly see all of my abs and the prominant vein that runs down my obliques. I stay single digit bodyfat.
 
i understand where nuk is going with the thread. I happen to be one of the guys hes probably talking about because i posted the other day i was in the high 15s. But like he said im not the only one. I have always associated body fat with visible abs and from everything i have heard 12% is when you start to really see them coming in. 10% theyre there and lookin good and 8% and under youre shredded bring out the laundry.

My abs are visible when flexed when i look in the mirror, and my stomach i flat from all angles. If im 20+ percent like another poster suggested i guess you can start to see abs at 20% and my 12% theory is bogus

your not 20 bro. My GF's son who is 15 and NEVER gets exercise, and eats frys, pizza and chicken nuggets all day is 20 % from the last dr's visit
 
According to one of the higher end Tanita scales at the hospital, I was 9%. A tiny low-end model at the gym said I was 14%. I'd say if you can't do the water tank analysis, the 7-fold caliper test would be the most accurate estimate.
 
here is another question. Say i get down to the point where my abs are showing up nice in 37 days, then on the cruise i do my usual 2 entrees at dinner, cheeseburgers fries tacos ect at lunch and monster breakfasts. Will i still have abs by the end of the 5 days? It wouldnt bother me either way because i am on vacation, but im just curious if i could lose them that fast
