PRAETORIAN, a lot of people will disagree with you about the eccentric part of an exercise. I guarantee you will experience more soreness by controlling the negative on ANY exercise rather than collapsing under the load and focusing solely on the concentric portion. More soreness means more microtrauma to the fascia and enclosed muscle fibers. And that's what induces hypertrophy.

Compare a powerlifter with an Oly lifter. Both guys are gonna be strong, no doubt about it. But the powerlifter is going to have a more developed musculature - bigger delts, bigger quads/hams, etc. What's the difference? Powerlifters control the eccentric portion of the lifts while Oly lifters typically focus on the concentric portion. When was the last time you saw an Oly lifter do a 3-sec. eccentric squat after cleaning the bar? Never. He'll collapse completely under the weight until he bottoms out and then drive out of the hole for jerk portion (all concentric). You try that with 800 pounds on your back and they'll be peeling your kneecaps off the wall! You better stay tight as **** all the way to depth if you want to make the attempt.

My post never advocated doing negatives. My intention was to convey the importance of controlling the weight on whatever exercise you do.

re: goldenear

I agree bro with controlling the weight,,trust me letting 600 on the bench or 750 on the squat drop uncontrolled would be debilitating to say the least. The eccentric part definitley adds to mass gain but in relation to the explosive concentric part i feel it pales in comparison. I know there are those who disagree and this is one subject that has been under great debate but thru experience and countless clients i fail to see any positive hypertrophy from negatives( i know not what you were recommending) or doing super slow eccentric motions. OY and powerlifters are apples and oranges as to their training methodology...also the TTUT(total time under tension) has to be considered as well...that is the argument that states that you cannot build mass with low reps..proven false...OY use momentum to there advantage in most lifts..speed is of utmost importance. But, if we are dicussing pure muscle hypertrophy, explosive concentric contractions seem to be the underlying factor in developing mass and strength at the same time keeping TTUT high enough for hypertrophy top occur after the training.
Peace,
P
