Ladies and Gents,
I love these threads - post your biggest gym follies / screw up / embarrassing moment.
I'll start.
Living and studying in Germany when my German was pretty shitty. Found the local "Fitness Studio," run by a local guy who didn't take kindly to foreigners - it was kind of an old school gym, with the same guys lifting that had been there for years. I was like the 4th American to come in there in the past week (all my other buddies), and he didn't like it much. (BTW, he spoke a dialect mainly, and understood, but spoke little textbook "High German" I had a blast trying to communicate with him.)
I finally convince him to let me sign up. I hadn't trained in weeks (backpacking across europe), so I decided to start with an incline bench, since I'd noticed that no one was using it (although it was loaded up).
The equip was the Schnell brand (german line). The Supports on the bench were about shoulder width and in the way for anyone with wide shoulders (piece of shit, basically). This of course meant that the supports made for a really nice pivot point for bar to tip.
I go over to the bench, feeling all of the reg's eyes on me. The bar is loaded with the heaviest plates on the outside for some reason (Murphy's law, of course). Not thinking (distracted by the all the evil looks and a bit pissed I just had to fight with the manager / owner just to sign up), I slip one of the heavy (20kg) plates off the end. THE DAMN BAR TIPS OVER, CRASHES TO THE FLOOR AND THE FREE END FALLS RIGHT INTO THE MIRROR ON THE WALL. Made a GIGANTIC gash in the floor AND BROKE a $700 mirror.
The owner strides on over with a beet red face and says slowly, "Das kostet Geld" "That costs money." I spent the next 2 hours trying to figure out what to do. No workout that day.
SOMEHOW, my insurance paid for it. EVERY DAMN DAY I came to workout - fo 6 months - he hounded me as I came in to the gym, wanting an update on his money. The mirror was finally paid off during the last week I was there.
He was pretty damn happy to see me go. LOL
