Engagement ring advice

It totally depends on the girl your marrying. How important it is to her. You might get lucky, she might no care if you get the ring from a gum ball machine.

5k is a lot of money to spend here bro, so if you can get a good deal that would be a BIG ring. Personally I think 1 carat is a good place to start, 1.5 carats is a great size and anything over that starts to get obnoxious in my opinion, especially if you're girl is petite. I know a guy who got his girl a 2 carat rock and she was a small girl and looked like she was walking around with an asteriod on her hand. Definitely make sure you look at the stone through a loop and look for cracks and inclusions in the stone itself... don't buy a ring that's already set into a setting. Pick your stone first and then pick your setting and stay with them and watch them set the stone you picked so you don't get scammed.

mikeswift is right, 1 - 1.5 is huge on tiny girls like my wife is tiny and hers looks pretty damn big and its just over a ct, and i spent just over 5k and if i could do it over i would never have picked white gold ring, its nice and all at first but even if you have to get it diped a couple times in a lifetime its scary caues leaving your wring with the jewelr is scary shit, for all u know u could have ur stone switched, it happens all the time, ourt jewelr was a freind thankfully and no worrys there

but buy platinum bro no white gold biggest mistake i made, and check the clarity urself, u will be abkle to tell after looking at a few wrings the huge difference in clarity and the inclusions and such, i was a pro by the time we finaly picked out my wifes, lol, yes she went with me, made sure she got what she wanted, lol, its a great diamond and a nice looking band but never never never buy white gold like we did!

CZ bro (cubic zarconium) she will never know the difference - my wife never noticed.
Seriously - do as much shoping and research as you can - dont rush!!!

If its much cheaper there than I would spend like 2 or 3K there. I'll ask my girl about diamond quality and get back to you though.

All good advice...go to the site PJT put on here and look at a few pics. Then get a loop to look at the stone with, when I bought mine I had some guy try to sell me a stone with huge black spots in it while he told me it was perfectly clear...even when I showed him the spots. You can't ever tell who you're going to get, so put it on yourself. Also, the 1-1.5 carats is a good size.

I have a buddy that went crazy a couple of months ago. Knew his girl for 4 weeks and went out and bought her a $10,000 ring! They were engaged within a few weeks (which is an entirely different post) and he was broke. He had a little money from a workers comp injury settlement, but that was gone. And what he's done is set her up in a lifestyle that he is unable to maintain. Things R going south on that front pretty quickly now and I don't know if he's got the balls to get the ring back. On top of that there is a no return policy for customized rings. Take home point here...you don't need a huge, fancy ring to let someone know that you love them. Get what you can afford, maybe strap yourself a little if you want to, but don't go overboard. And stick with the 1-1.5 carat rule mentioned above. I'm sure things will work out good for you guys and congrats on making this decision. Hope everything works out for you bud.
