How to Build Big Shoulders: Presses vs. Laterals
The Texas Oak
By Logan Franklin

Q: A pretty well-known old-school bodybuilder who won the Mr. America, Doug Brignole, advises lifters to stay away from overhead presses for shoulders and to instead concentrate on various types of lateral raises. Do you think it’s possible to build the deltoids to their maximum size potential without presses?

A: I haven’t done a shoulder press since I was stationed in Korea back in 2013. I took them out of my regimen completely because I felt my front delts were big enough, and I needed to work harder on my side and rear delts to balance out my shoulders. Even though I keep my front delts rolled back when doing presses for my chest to keep the tension on my pecs, I still feel my front delts get ample work there. By today’s Open Bodybuilding standards, you do need massive shoulders and presses will help you do that. In the days of classic bodybuilding, shoulders weren’t as developed as that, so presses might not be necessary if you’re after a “Classic,” more aesthetic look. I feel like maxing out my shoulder mass would take away from my chest and arms and make them appear smaller. You really need to be able to objectively evaluate your physique and figure out what needs to grow and what doesn’t to keep getting closer to perfect proportions.

Stay Single or Get Married?

Q: I’ve heard some pros like Shawn Ray say it’s best to stay single and
wait until you retire to get married and start a family. Others, like Lee Haney, believed his family strengthened him and gave him a greater purpose. Since you started your pro career as a single man and you now have a family, what are your thoughts on this?

A: There are two ways to look at it. There are benefits to being a single man. You can completely isolate yourself without worrying about dividing your focus and energy. But there’s also something about having a woman at home who loves and supports you, and a child who needs your time and energy. Both sides have their advantages and challenges. Bodybuilding as a single man can lead to a lot of distractions, especially if you’re into nightlife and chasing women. If you’re a single man who can fully focus and apply everything to bodybuilding, it can be very beneficial. All that said, having a woman who’s there for you helps give you a greater strength and purpose. The bottom line is that single or not, you want to have stability in your life so you can fully focus on going after your goals.

Dips for Pumped Chest

Q: The old-school bodybuilders like Arnold and Franco used to do tons of parallel bar dips for their chests, but I don’t see anyone these days doing that. Are dips something we should be doing for chest, or do you think they get plenty of work with various presses with barbells, dumbbells and machines?

A: Dips have become a lost exercise, like pull-ups. I finish every single chest workout with dips. Even though I’m already pumped, it takes my chest pump to an even higher level and I finish the workout feeling like my pecs are crazy round and full. I like to do three sets to failure, leaning forward, with no cheating. You won’t need any added weight, but you do want to get a nice deep stretch and then forcefully squeeze the pecs as you drive up every rep.

Real Warriors and ‘Stolen Valor’

Q: As a veteran of the Armed Forces who served overseas during wartime, do you get offended when you hear bodybuilders describing themselves as “warriors” who are “going to war” every time they train?

A: I don’t get offended, but I do find it funny when someone says that who has never been in that situation and doesn’t know what actual war is like. I understand the attitude and mentality they are trying to convey, but real war is something most people will luckily never experience. One thing I have zero tolerance for is “stolen valor,” where people dress in military uniforms and pass themselves off as soldiers or veterans who have never even served in the Armed Forces. You don’t get a pass for that, ever!

Texas Leg Workout: Feel the Burn

Q: I’m sure you’ve had some intense workouts over the years. Is there any one that stands out for any reason as the toughest or most intense workout you’ve ever done?

A: It would have to be one of my leg workouts with my old training coach Kash Guidry, who put me through hell on some of those Texas days where it was over 100 degrees, humid, and with no air conditioning. The warehouse-style gyms were especially effective at trapping heat and humidity for maximum misery! Taking all your sets to failure in that environment was hellacious.

Eat More Before Training Large Body Parts?

Q: Do you believe in eating more calories or carbs on days you train larger body parts like legs or back, or is your food intake the same every day?

A: I know a lot of people do like to increase their calories around workouts for larger muscle groups, but I try to keep my food intake and calories consistent from day to day. Others will even strategically have cheat meals the night before legs. You might find this benefits you, so you can give it a try. If you do find you have better pumps and endurance for your leg or back workouts the day after you’ve had your pizza or burgers and fries, go ahead and do that. If you don’t notice any difference, there’s no need to eat that stuff. An alternate tactic could be to keep eating clean, and just bump up your carbohydrates in the pre- and post-workout meals on those days by 30-50 percent. I have carbs in my intra-workout shake, so I don’t run into the problem of running out of muscle glycogen halfway through any given workout.
