I'm considering a triathalon (sp?)

I'd like to do a triathalon. I know I wouldn't be winning them but it's something I've just started to take a interest in since I've been doing long cardio runs. I used to swim on a swim team, so I'm a strong swimmer. I think my biggest challenge would be the bike ride.

anyone ever compete? what was hardest for you? How did you train for it? How long was it on each sport?

I was pretty competitive in triathlons a few years back. best training I ever did is as follows: (considering you are already an average swimmer, cyclist, and runner)

Depending on your ability this process may have to start as far as 24 wks. out

swim day one
rest day two
bike day three
rest day four
run day five
rest day six and seven (can do light resistance training here if you feel up to it)

follow this schedule until you can consistently complete the distances that are required for your event in each activity.

Once the endurance is no problem find out what the competitive times have been in your event in years past.

Start dialing in on those times for each activity

Once you feel good about times drop workouts to three days a wk.

Day one swim and bike
day two rest
day three light resistance training
day four rest
day five bike and run
day six rest
day seven rest

Once again work your way up to completeing the required distances this time in the combined events. You need to be able to complete these combined distances at 2 months out from the event.

At five weeks out

day one light resistance training
day two run all out effort half the distance of the running portion of event.
day three rest
day four rest
day five rest
day six complete entire event all out effort just like you are competing
day seven rest

4 wks. out

day one rest
day two rest
day three swim entire distance
day four rest
day five bike entire distance
day six rest
day seven run entire distance

3 wks. out

day one rest
day two light resistance training
day three rest
day four swim entire distance
day five rest
day six bike entire distance run 1/2 the distance
day seven rest

2 wks. out

day one swim entire distance
day two bike entire distance
day three run entire distance
day four rest
day five rest
day six light resistance training
day seven rest

wk. of race
Day one swim entire distance
day two swim half distance
day three swim quarter of distance
rest until race

That is a quick overview. maybe hard to read the way I formatted it. Let me know if you want further explanations, but this program worked great for me for alot of years

Yeah, I was going to say you are going to lose a ton of size training to compete in a triathalon. Since it's mostly cardio and endurance training. You'll eat up most of that muscle that you worked hard to put on, but at the same time you'll lose a lot of bodyfat. Having too much muscle definitely puts you at a disadvantage while competing in these races. That's why you see mostly really thin, low bodyfat guys doing these races, but if it's a goal to do one of them I can understand that.

Just be prepared for getting a lot smaller in the process. It can definitely be a mind fuck.
