New Jersey moves to curb steroid use by police

By Aman Ali Aman Ali – Mon Jan 10, 5:42 pm ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Lawmakers in New Jersey are considering measures that would crack down on steroid use by police and firefighters, some of whom abuse the drugs in their efforts to keep physically fit, experts say.
The state Assembly bills introduced on Monday, believed to be the first of their kind in the nation, would require health evaluations before law enforcement could be prescribed anabolic steroids and and would add such drugs to a list of substances for which law enforcement employees are randomly tested.

"This is focused on uniformed public employees, but this is really a nationwide problem," said Assemblyman John McKeon, the Deputy Speaker who introduced the bills.

"A lot of these anti-aging clinics and charlatans are selling these products, and we need to examine the long-term health problems."

The National Conference on State Legislatures said it did notknow of any similar legislation in other states and New Jersey's measures could be the first in the nation. Most steroid laws regulate high school athletes, it said.
Law enforcement steroid use is a problem around the country and, given that steroid use can cause aggression, can invite problems for police, said Larry Gaines, chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice at California State University in San Bernadino, California.

"Aggression is not very common but nonetheless it's a possible problem," Gaines said. "If it does occur, you could see lawsuits against police departments regarding citizens injured from steroid rage."
Competitiveness is a major reason why police and firefighters might use steroids, he said.

"A number of departments focus very highly on physical fitness and ability," Gaines said.

"Secondly, a lot of these officers see substantial dangers on the job so they feel they should be in some kind of top level of physical fitness."
The New Jersey Firefighter Mutual Benevolent Association, a state firefighters union, welcomes any initiative to crack down on steroid abuse, said president Bill Lavin.

"We're obviously in favor of testing and not in favor of using illegal drugs of any sort," Lavin said. "I think steroids represent a small segment of our industry, and certainly we're in favor of doing anything to curtail it."
The New Jersey measures come in response to reports last month of a local doctor who illegally supplied hundreds of police and firefighters with anabolic steroids, human growth hormones and other muscle-building drugs.
"Just like everybody I was outraged," said McKeon. "Being in the position I'm in, I'm even more outraged about the multiple millions of dollars that has cost our system for the years to come."

The state attorney general is investigating the allegations, first reported last month by the Newark Star-Ledger newspaper, that millions of taxpayer dollars were illegally spent on the drugs, spokesman Paul Loriquet said.
McKeon said he hopes the bill will stop police and firefighters from abusing steroids, saying most of them probably do not have a medical reason to use them.

totally agrreing with you, the sad part is the teenager who gets his ass whipped now a days will come back and shoot someone, I'd def want the fire fighters to be big, who the hell do u want to rely on to carry you out of a burning building, or get you out of a car your stuck in? an 80 pound pretzel queer, or a jacked person capable of rescue. Super heros are portrayed as big individuals for a reason, like if its up to Batman or Bill Nye the science guy, that needs to drag me outta some shit, imma have to go with Batman

This is country and it's lawmakers are a fucking joke. Let's ban the stuff that helps you and keep the stuff that kills you legal.

fuckn Ay man!!!

i waiting for the micro chip implants to start happening. then no one will be free to do what they want, in this free country!!!

cant fuckn lift weights in peice hardlyany more. thats why most cops become cops, they dremt of being super heroes, fighting crime and kickin ass. and fire fighters the same reason, who wouldnt want to be recognized for pulling a 400 pound fat dude from a burning building, or rescueing an ol'lady from falling.

Let me juice and live my dream in piece sheesh

You knew it was coming. Steroids in baseball was a huge headline and so many idiots buried their heads in that while the Govt was raping them blind. This is just another way to keep the publics eye on some ridiculous headline as opposed to the outrageous legislation that is going on. Since when is some jackass politician in any way qualified to argue a Dr's prescribed treatment?! I see litigation soon to follow. Single out people or a group and violate their rights and someone is going to get pissed and sue. Funny.... I missed the part where they'll check to make sure injured officers and firefighters REALLY need pain pills. It's OK for Newt Gingrich (sp?) to have a massive addiction and illegal immigrant housekeepers, but everybody else better pay taxes and shut the fuck up!

Well, they are out to get their own people, did you guys see where the FBI got 4 of their own agents for using "LEGALLY" meaning by prescription...They are putting so much emphasis on this and spending a fortune to prevent something that is not a problem, lets focus on the real problems in society, so absurd its sickening...

4 FBI Agents Accused of Lying About Steroid Use

It's funny how politicians make all the laws yet they aren't drug tested. I doubt any of those high powered senators and legislators do cocaine with their stripper girls on the side. The charges against the FBI people were dropped and from what I hear there was an out of court settlement for the incident.

The ridiculous thing is that there is really no standard at which you can say anabolic steroids are being abused other than a high reading in a blood test--which doesn't say anything at all. There have been no long-term studies on the effects of high levels of testosterone so who is to say that it's abuse to have a higher than normal level of testosterone. This can occur naturally for some men, are we going to put them in jail because their gonads are being overproductive? Give me a break.

They try to use aggression in the article as a means to point out steroids as being bad yet they say "possible problem." I haven't heard of any lawsuits about steroid rage about anyone let alone police officers. The rage is only a myth that is perpetuated by the media. Cops who have problems are usually assholes to begin with and don't need any help from steroids to be that way.

Lol, next is that officers feel they should be "in some kind of top level of physical fitness." I would have to agree, wouldn't you? Never mind that, we want a fat ball of an officer eating donuts who can't run after the guy who just snatched a lady's purse, or a firefighter who can't even pick up the fire hose to put out that next 3-alarm apartment fire.

The union president obviously wouldn't want to use illegal drugs, however, steroids are not illegal when prescribed correctly, and if steroids are such a small segment of the industry, why the huge effort to contain it?

These days testosterone levels are declining among most men because of environmental factors besides age. What is the most common age range of firefighters and officers? It certainly is not in the 20-30 range. There are many men who are low and don't even know it so they very well could have a valid medical reason for being on.

Exactly.

Just to add my 2cents which i will, lol, if they realy realy realy want to catch cops that are using steroids, then they should start with the state police! The state police in Jersey are juiced to the high heavens! I cant speak on the town cops but the state police i can! And im not guessing or assuming this shit, i just happen to know of alot of state police officers use steroids on a regular basis and they have no problem talking about it in the gyms as they come off like they are above the law anyhow, lmao
