I notice all the low carb products now have these instead of sugars. So, what's the difference. Does your body treat them any different then straight sugars ?
Sugar alcohol has little to no effect on insulin in small quantitys, although large amounts can spike insulin. Sugar alcohol contains 1.5 - 3 calories per gram (depending on type). Bloating and diarrhea can occur when sugar alcohols are eaten in excessive amounts. Sugar alcohols can cause a laxative effect. Weight gain has been seen when these products are overeaten. The American Diabetes Association claims that sugar alcohols are acceptable in a moderate amount but should not be eaten in excess.
Thats all my wife and I use! We go through 2 gallons of unsweetened coolaid soft drink mixed with splenda a day, its the best tasing stuff around and actualy quenches my thirst unlike the other sugar substitutes like equal and sweet and low.
